repairing bark damage on large oak

creekweb

Lightning struck a 4 ft diameter oak leaving a visible 3ft long by 7 inch wide area where the bark was ripped off. The bottom of this area is only about 6 inches from the ground. The bark is about 3/4 inches in thickness.

My plan is to broaden the injury so as to remove any bark that is not attached and try to achieve an elliptical injury pattern. I will then grade the remaining bark so that there is not a stepoff at the site of the injury so that there will be less of a likelihood for additional bark to be stripped off in the future.

Whether to apply a coating over the denuded wood is controversial and I routinely do not when cutting branches, but in this case I plan to if only for cosmetic purposes on an injury that will take a very long time to heal.

Any helpful thoughts or experiences with this type of repair would be appreciated.
