Who's the person who has posted/lurked for the longest time here?
Comments (55)I've been an IT guy since 89 and found out about the Net from a friend at UConn in 90. My first ISP was Escape which turned into Mindspring. I was still using a non-graphical brower (Lynx) when I first came across this site. Things were happening very quickly in those days! Either Painterart joined a lot earlier than he thinks or I joined a lot later than I think but my sense of things is that I was here ~92. I was still visiting rec.gardens.orchids quite a bit but gradually began to realize that I had more to contribute to GardenWeb. I tried the odd compact flourescent in the mid 90's and I had tubes for a while in 99/2000 but I didn't get my first real set of lights till 2001, three 160W Wonderlites. I knew well before that that if I had lights the winter die off's would end or at least lessen. That proved to be very much the case and I have written hundreds of thousands of words to that effect in the six intervening years. Rock on, everyone. Comments (3)What I would do is to keep the winter sun from hitting the trunk during really cold spells - it isn't so much the freezing that does damage as it is a rapid thawing. Wrapping the trunk with a trunk guard, or just burlap, etc. should help protect it. I may be wrong and may be misremembering advice from a number of years ago, so am open to correction. If you are still worried, you can post your photo over on the Maple Forum - it's mostly about Japanese maples over there....See MoreDoes My Kumquat Have a Split Personality?
Comments (12)The petiole wings are smaller than most of the Kaffir Lime pics that I found, but then I came across a few KL pictures that seemed very similar. And my plant has large thorns, as well, which the lime plant seems to. I would agree with you, though, in that I think the leaves probably more closely resemble that of a grapefruit plant, but I haven't found anything that states that grapefruit plants have the same thorns that mine does. I would estimate that my plant is probably about 5 years old. What do you think? Thanks for all your help!...See MoreHas anyone built a split-level?
Comments (30)If going up and down stairs frequently isn't an issue for you, then do it. For me, personally, I'd rather go up and down a full flight of stairs a couple of times per day rather than go up and down a fewer number of steps 30 times per day. I have family members that own a 4-level house. They make it work but ugh, I could never do it. When you enter you're on the main floor which is also the 2nd level. This level has the family room, powder room, laundry room, and garage. If you walk up 3 steps you get to the formal living, kitchen, and tiny dining nook. From this 3rd level you then go up about 10 steps to get to the bedrooms and guest bath. Then there's a basement which has around 8 steps maybe. Constantly going up and down stairs all day long, even if it's just a few at a time. It also really breaks their house up and my sister-in-law has commented that it's difficult having a lot of people over because they have to spread out on different levels to fit comfortably....See Moresmorz
