Just wondering what these are and if they're going to be anything other than what they are now, ugly.

The last photos look like mulberry which is a tree, so not something you would want that near a building regardless of how you feel about mulberries. You can cut to flush with the ground and paint the cambinum (layer just under bark) with brush killer.

The first two photos look like privet, probably a golden type, either badly pruned or cultural problems (bad soil or not enough light for instance). In good circumstances, hard pruning privet can rejuvinate them, but they aren't a favorite shrub of mine, so I would remove them. They also look rather too close to the building.

foundation plantings are planted to hide the foundation .. NOT ON THE FOUNDATION... and that was prior owners first mistake ...

with good annual pruning ... some stuff can fit in that tiny bed ... but why privet??? ... that was their second mistake ...

bottom line ... they are badly planted.. the wrong plant.. overly mature ... and need to go ...

yes.. yo can make a 3 year renovation project of them .. might not be pretty during that time ... but lifes too short.. just get rid of them ...

the mulberry is a nightmare weed tree... i could send you a couple thousand seedlings if you want more.. get rid of it ...

increase the bed by 5 to 10 feet... and make a nice bed for some flowers ... if you want to work that hard ... and then leave 2 feet free and clear at the foundation ... taking into account the size of the plants you plant ...

Thank you all for the help you have given me identifying some of my plants/weeds. I am curious about the plant called "weed5s.jpg" - it is growing quite tall (4') and now has small, tight flower buds at the very top. Actually I pulled up most of them as they are quite ugly, but left one incase you tell me it is a prize possession! Anyone out there have any idea what it is? Creatrix - once you mentioned Black-Eyed Susan, I remembered I'd planted a stem with a bit of root that fell off a plant I got last year - and indeed that was it - I'll make a label right away! I've pulled up the burdock as it was overshadowing all else around it, and I am starting on my quest to remove all the Artemisia vulgaris - it's not going to be easy - lots of roots. I did google it and found many more references to it being a substitute for marijuans than it being an invasive plant. Think I'd better keep that to myself! Again thanks - Jakki

bonjour, j'ai deux grimpants dont je n'ai pas vu les noms dans vos Ã©changes : tout d'abord, Sombreuil, rosier ancien, magnifiques fleurs trÃ¨s pleines, d'un blanc crÃ¨me particulier, et surtout d'un parfum Ã se damner. Bien remontant, c'est un des premiers que j'ai plantÃ© et il m'enchante toujours autant depuis 14 ans. Il se bouture trÃ¨s bien, un de ses bÃ©bÃ©s commence Ã s'Ã©panouir cette annÃ©e et ce petit miracle me rend toute bÃªte Ã chaque fois que je passe Ã cÃ´tÃ©. Mon autre merveille c'est Albertine. I use "SelecTree" all the time..and I love it! But the trouble is that if you don't know a tree and you aren't familiar with the technical terms for various elements of the tree, then it is very hard to identify a tree! And if you just leave the various categories blank, you end up with 120 trees--which makes it very difficult to tell which one it is. I have tried to learn the technical names (figured out what "pinnately compound odd" leaves are!). But even when I look up the definition for the leaf types, I'm not sure that I've chosen the right type... like, what's the difference between elliptical and oval shaped leaves? I have no clue! Is the bark light grey or light brown? Sometimes its so hard to tell! What would be SO helpful is if SelecTree let you use a name AND search terms...for example...if I could search for all of the ash trees, but narrow it down to the ones that are evergreen...that would help! I also think that it would help if they had 3 different pictures of each tree on the search page list...one of the leaf close up, one of a mature tree, and perhaps one of a branch or a young tree? So many of the pictures on the search list are not helpful in terms of identification...pictures of bark or of tiny trees found growing in a forest among other trees. Don't get me wrong--I love it! Just wishing it were easier for us non-professionals to use.

Looks kind of like a burr oak, but very young oaks often have a bit different leaves than adults., Also looks like a swamp chestnut oak, but the latter is unlikely in MI. Looks like it's sprouting from a base?

The top ones do look like a Privet of some description, Ligustrum. If you cut them down very low they will grow bushier from the bottom. But they'll never be particularly interesting.

Agree with floral; privet can be cut all the way to the ground and they will respond very quickly with new growth. However, they are a very boring, overused plant. Whoever planted them spent about three seconds thinking about it.

But, in some locations, that's all that is needed.

==>> but they will remain one foot from the brick ... and can easily make a 4 foot round ball every season ...

just to be the devils advocate.. they need to go ...

listen.. cut short ... watch for a year or two ... decide if you like the 2 or 3 shearings a year to maintain some small size ..

if you can live with it.. keep them ...if not.. sharpen your shovel ...

too many newbs.. think or want instant gratification in the garden ... most of us.. make a choice.. act.. and give the plant a year or two .. etc ... starting to repeat...

with knowledge.. now you can make a right decision for you .. let us know ... we bet on these things... lol ...
