Comments (4)Whew, right on target again, Chris! Thanks. "Tree of Heaven" is the common name, per Wikipedia. Strangely, I've never heard of either the common name or scientific name, despite the tree being so common. I thought this Wikipedia description was funny: "The odour tends to resemble the smell of strong cat urine or the spray of a male cat. Also, touching the leaves leaves an unpleasant smell on the hands." Here is a link that might be useful: Alianthus on Wikipedia...See MoreIdentification of a California shrub
Comments (10)Thanks to everyone for your responses. I spoke with a master gardener at the Ventura County Extension Office and it is Xylosma Congestum. As Joe said, I did not mean to imply it was native, my apologies. One of the major nurseries here in Austin is starting to push it as an alternative to Waxleaf Ligustrum and Red Tip Photinia. Both of which have been grossly over planted all over Texas. I thought I recognized it from the picture but wanted to be sure. I am thinking about trying it and wanted to research it more once I confirmed that it is xylosma. Mike - Thanks for the compliment of my daughter. Unfortunately it was a whirlwind tour and I really don't remember a lot of the landscaping except for the picture above and the roses. Although, everywhere I went in Los Angeles and San Diego the roses were phenomenal! Thanks again for everyones' responses, Jeremy...See MoreWestern Redbud in S. California
Comments (5)Hi, I'm inland near Pomona and have had a Western Redbud for 5 or 6 years. It's done very well, although my zone is a little different than yours. It resembles a silver dollar eucalyptus. It does put on a nice show of pinkish red flowers before it leafs out every year (sorry, I haven't taken any pics of the flowers). It gets no water except rain and stays nice and green, even this year with almost no rain. When our pool is demolished the first week of November, we'll probably plant a few more of them. Hope that helps. Linda...See Morekatymayphd
