Is Everyone in the Midwest OK?
Comments (12)Thanks everyone. I'm glad we were all ok. Still people without electric N Of chicago. I have to ask, the next day my INDOOR masde's in bloom blasted and my phal blooms are dying. Now a couple of kids set of some big fireworks across the street, maybe sulfur smoke maybe not. Do you think it has to do with the god awful stench in here? I checked them before I went to bed, when I got up their heads were on the ground. 7 hours? It is the strangest thing I've ever seen. I can say I got so desperate I crushed up charcol and dumped it down the sink, baking soda and bleach. I'm lucky I didn't have a chemical reaction and explode the house. Charcol works pretty good beter with baking soda thanks! . Does anyone have an opinion on waterlogged orchids having a charcol/ baking soda powder spa for an hour? anyone ever try it? My pharmacist's BLC is bad. I'm scared Jane Help! Got the fans going, doors open and today its dry as a bone and 76º put some out again. (You think I'd learn!) But its ~30% RH WC you are too funny, I tried the drinking last night. I ended up watering my carnivours with bloom booster and cut a good spike off a Twinkle. I'll try to get it right tonight! Green stays, brown gets cut.... I did manage to build an orchid condo. Vanda baskets stacked up. Put bricks on the lower level. Hope it holds for those who can't come in. If you can believe during this disaster I found 4 more little orphans on my doorstep. Its a miracle they didn't blow away. 2 little tropical trees, a phal and a very sick, rootless floppy, paph... The phal is in really good shape. Someone is watching or has very good timing. How can they sneak up on me like that? The plot thickens. There's always room for more I suppose. I ended up putting a laminated sign up on the door thanking the person for dropping them off; they will be loved. Also wrote, that the mystery person(s) can have them back when they rebloom or recover. The next day 2 more babies appeared and really nice pot. The sign was gone. Kinda spooky... and kinda fun Clara Living in Rehab City...See MoreWIll young American Elm sprout from the base/roots if cut down?
Comments (2)I did some more reading, and a few sites say that trees lost to Dutch Elm Disease may send up shoots from the base, but they soon succumb to the disease. Oh well, I cut it down just at the root crown. If it doesn't send up a shoot this summer, I'll order a Princeton elm. Alex...See MorePrinceton elm -- black spotted leaves
Comments (2)hey megan ... how long ago did you 'just' transplant it .... and how fast did the leaves change ... and can you post a pic??? leaf damage due to transplant stress is not uncommon ... but should not happen all that fast ... so if it has only been days... its not related IMHO .... also.. its very late in the year....and leaf fall is around the corner.. hastened by transplant ... your timing.. isnt all that bad.. but not the best.. i would have planted the tree.. just after it lost all its leaves ... and guess what... i would not be in your position of worry about how torturing it from the earth while fully leafed out.. would affect the leaves ... i say ... sans a picture.. keep it PROPERLY WATERED.. and PROPERLY MULCHED ... and see what happens next spring ... it is not really the time of year to be wasting chemicals on treatment.. and you will never fertilize.. so.. in my world.. there is nothing to do.. but wait for next spring ... good luck ken...See Moreamerican elm restoration
Comments (10)There are a couple of issues in this thread. I'll take the second one first. Before air conditioning, people planted shade trees for their cooling effect. This doesn't really work unless you are in the shade of the tree, which when the sun is highest in the sky means you are under the thing. So old neighborhoods still can have big trees planted close to houses. The ones that don't have lost their trees since you can't mess around with structural problems on trees that close. However, when I was a kid most of the houses I was familiar with had trees within 15 ft of the house. My grandmother's house had a maple about 2 ft away from the porch. At that point, almost all of the tree is over the house in the air, so the only space considerations are how big the trunk is. So an enormously massive tree takes up maybe 9 sq ft on the ground. So yes, most people really do have space for these things. However, planting a large tree is a major investment. Not in money, but in time. And when you don't have the space, relatively minor health issues can quickly become major problems. Nobody wants to spend 30 or 40 years waiting for a tree to grow, then have to spend the money to take it down because it's sick. So there is going to be an awful lot of conservatism regarding what species of trees get planted. BTW, a local park has planted about a dozen blight resistant American chestnuts in an area where they will be an asset if they do well, but won't be difficult to remove is that becomes necessary. The thing that has always puzzled me, though, is that they are planted on about 20 ft centers....See Moreviper114
