FIrst, you need to WAIT. If you only planted these roses a month ago, they have not even settled in yet, no matter which roses they are. Make sure they have enough water, and leave them alone. I presume that the new growth you and blooming you are seeing is mostly not terribly long canes that are not terribly big around? When they really decide to climb (which may take many months or a few years), they will suddenly start putting out one or more larger, long canes. Sometimes this frightens people, the canes grow so fast and tall. At that point, yes, to get the most flowers you can GENTLY pull the canes to as horizontal as you can get them without damaging them, and tie the to the lattice. They will put out blooms all along their length that way, instead of just one at the top. Do post pics on here of the bushes and the blooms - someone will probably recognize them. Jackie

I would leave it also but cover the wound. I have successfully splinted wounds before. I generally use a couple of popsicle sticks and some floral tape but any sticks that will provide support and tape that will keep the wound covered so bad things can't get in will work.

Ashley, Congratulations on your new home and garden. Welcome to the Rose forum. You will find there are many lovely and helpful folks here. Your climber looks much better on the trellis! Nice job. Yes to getting that trellis fixed into place or it will be a sail in the wind. Here are two videos to give you an idea how to train and prune a climber over time. I have never heard of cutting back a bare root rose at planting unless there is some dead cane to be removed. Pruning of any kind always stimulates TOP growth, not the roots. You can leave all the hips on you want. The rose will not go dormant. It will continue to put out growth until the weather stops it. I've left hips on from the spring flush in June and the rose continued to grow and bloom right through until October. New Dawn is such a growth monster that I can't see any purpose in disbudding it. The roots are growing, count on it! Roses, climbers in particular, will not send up more cane than their root system can sustain. Hence the saying for climbers, first year sleep, second year creep, third year leap. Those first few years that it seems to not be doing anything it is in fact building a big enough root ball to be able to push nutrients up those long canes you're waiting for. Once it feels it has sufficient roots to do that it will begin to climb.
