HELP! Found Rose, Climbing / Running - What to do??

Hi! I recently moved and found there is a rose plant growing on the side of my house. From my research, I believe it is a "climbing rose", but I have never planted or taken care of a rose before. Today I bought a large trellis and was hoping someone could tell me how to care for this plant. I live in Raleigh, NC...we have summer weather in the 80s and 90s.
Questions....What kind of rose is it?! How should I train it to climb the trellis? How should I prune it? How do I know how old it is? Etc? I will attach photos if I can figure out how!

Your explaining to me that climbers in their first and second year will make busy growth that doesn't turn into climbing growth is very helpful information to me. I didn't know this and was wondering why they weren't getting as long as some as the others. I've been doing my best to keep the canes fanned out. I'll try harder. Man, those thorns are huge and they really hurt. lol Okay, I'm not sure what you mean by this...Even though 'Polka' doesn't make extremely long climbing shoots, it will need some of the real estate now occupied by the vines. Hmmm..I didn't know it could be pruned to become a large shrub. That is good to know too. I think tomorrow I will try to fan them out a little neater. The branches in the front that I was thinking of pruning back have rosebuds on them. Should I let them bloom before cutting the stem off? Thank you for saying my rose is pretty. Comments (15)Spring of this year I had a Mary Rose. When she began to leaf out the growth could only be described as rrd [leaf nodes with as many as five stems growing from them, long thin leaves, so many thorns it barely had a cane, many buds all twisted and shriveled up. I took the rose out that night. Than the same thing on midnight blue and easy going, I carefully removed them. Several weeks passed before three more roses began showing the same growth usually on just one or two canes. I can't begin to tell you how sick I felt. Well against all wisdom I had to try some thing. I did not remove the rose or the cane. Believe me, I know this was not a good thing to do. Yet something wasn't right so I had to try. I thought things were so bad at this point I needed to know for sure. I cut the roses back to healthy growth and waited, knowing if it was rrd the returning growth wouldn't get better. A month has passed now and all the growth on Heritage, Perdita and Fragrant Masterpiece has been fine. Please, I'm not saying any one should do this. These roses all had three or more symtoms of rrd, they all looked like pictures of rrd. I know it wasn't herbicide damage. I have more questions then [Hines has pickles]. Maybe, if its your fist time seeing suspected rrd and it's only on one cane, removing that cane and observing new growth wouldn't be a bad idea. I'm certainly no expert but I have a feeling I'm not the only person who has had this problem and maybe it wasn't rrd. If I were to ask every question I have now it would read like a book. Comments (12)Thank you so much for all the advice. I always wondered how people achieved that full look. I didn't understand what laterals were and that they produced blooms so you have blooms along the canes. I had heard about them blooming more if they were at a forty five degree angle, but didn't know about weaving them back and forth. Thanks for the video link, and for your before and after picture subk3, a picture makes it so much clearer to me. By the way that is one drop dead climbing rose and clematis combination you have, the soft pink and purple combination is breathtaking. What a wonderfull welcome home! Yes, I love the idea of using lattice! One question, should I stain it the french vanilla stain, or would you leave it to age to a natural gray? Or would you just be confident it wouldn't matter, because it would be covered with roses :-). I am not sure that in my zone how much to expect..nowhere near as much as subk's I am sure. I also like the idea of tying the sprout of the main cane to the top rail. This is my dining room, and it will be nice to look out and see them. I can hardly wait until next spring to try this. Meanwhile I will have to check on how to prune them. I am not sure what the name is. I am from a very small town, and this was from a very small nursery. This is the only red they had, so I didn't pay any attention to the name. Looking on the Internet there doesn't seem to be many for this zone, so my guess is Henry Kelsey. Subk3, I guess I just call the whole unit in general a misting unit, the black box is a pump relay, it kicks the pump off and on so it doesn't run continually. Thanks Seil for the idea. Yes I know the graft has to be buried in my zone, my question is with an ownroot rose would there also be a benefit to planting them six inches deeper than all you lucky warm climate growers? Interesting note...when I bought my hybred teas and grafted roses,( this was in a bigger town with a large selection) but same zone I asked about burying the grafts and she recommended cutting out the bottom of a nursery container and filling it with peat moss. Comments (2)I had the same thing happened to one of my ramblers this year-Brushing Lucy, it can't go around the whole porch now due to the same issue. I have to cut it back a lot in the early spring. I am in zone 6a, it has been pretty winter hardy, but this year I also had rabbit damage to some of the main canes. Some of the canes don't have much leaves, and turned brown......canker issue! I cut off some of the branches earlier, then we got sooo much rain for a long time, it rained everyday for 2 weeks straight. I think my issue is due to the canker. Now I have to wait when the hot weather cools down a little, and cut it back more tonight. Now is 81 degrees and sunny, the air is burnning outside!...See More

Well...I tried! I needed to fasten it up since it was crossing the sidewalk. I wasn't exactly sure how or where to fasten it but this was the result! Well there are also mosquito bites and finger pricks involved, but this was prettier. Thanks guys!
