Yet another lamp question

Hi everyone,

This lamp belonged to my great grandmother and I imagine she probably would have purchased it around 1920 or earlier. It is brass I believe and has an unusual shade. The shade has what looks to be an Egyptian style and it is made out of some sort of metal screen material. It has a sandy and gritty feel to it too. There doesn't seem to be any makers mark anywhere. Is anyone familiar with it??

How about a picture of the whole lamp? Maybe Google Elbert Hubbard lamp...
I think it looks more craft's man than Deco.

The Ilex vomitoria cultivar that stays very upright is called 'Will Flemming' I have never used it but it is an interesting selection. Other options might be Ligustrum texanum (Buy 15 gallon espalier on 5' x 5' trellis) I did this on a project last June planted them 5' OC and the plants are about 7-1/2' tall right now(where untrimmed)and about 1' thick. You could probably get them to grow to 10'maybe more. Eugenia myrtifolia is another option (Australian Brush Cherry) 'Monterey Bay' is a nice clone. Lets see- I have seen Grewia caffra get 12' tall (But it will need some support for a while until the plant gets woody enough to hold its own weight and would need some pinching to get it to be bushy enough. Sometimes you can find Magnolia grandiflora 'Little Gem' or St Mary espaliered as well- Podocarpus henkelii would be OK if you could let it go a bit thicker (like 3-4') Also Calliandra haematocephala espaliered could work. If you have shade maybe a vigorous Camellia like 'Silver Waves' espaliered in 15 gallons could work but it would be a quite a wait to get the height.

Light emitting diodes used for illumination are generally blue to UV emitting that pump a high efficiency phosphor that produces white light. In a sense, one might describe them as solid-state fluorescent lights. The phosphor can be selected to yield a particular color temperature, from warm white to daylight. People on the kitchen forum used to discuss this, and some asserted that warm white was better, perhaps (I'm guessing) due to its correspondence with incandescent illumination. Some architectural "can" LED based lights use additional red LEDs to better balance the color. IIRC, Cree claims its lights include detection circuitry to adjust the red level to keep the color temperature constant. Anyway, if possible select a hood for which the LED lights have some standard lamp configuration, such as R-20, so that there is a wider range of replacements from which one can select the color temperature one wants. kas

I reached a decision and have a couple more things on order now. I received the mission-style lamp and absolutely love it. The base is less coppery looking than in the photo - more dark antiqued bronze. Love it, love it. So here's the lineup for my new space, and I think it'll all be very pretty, somewhat understated (for me, anyway), and in keeping with the surrounding decor. -Sorry the photos are not to scale. It's not a huge clock, only 12" x 12", and it will hang over my computer. I ended up choosing this particular tapestry because after spending time in the new space (I'm currently back and forth between offices until next week), it is perfect with the flooring, the lamp, and the guest chairs opposite my desk (they are mahogany stained with deep navy upholstery). I have brought in a little art pottery piece in muted blues that I got at Stonehenge and will also bring in one more artisan-crafted bowl from home (in shades of green and copper). I'm very pleased with how this is all coming together, and thank those of you who gave me input and encouragement very much!

Heehee! Four kitties with four legs = 16. ;-) I truly appreciate all of the opinions expressed here. Varying thoughts help me think things through from all angles, DebraW - I thought I could put my hands on the document that lists the paint used in this house but I'm not sure where it is at the moment. I'll keep looking and hope to come across it soon. I'm pretty sure the builder used Sherwin Williams brand but I'm not sure of the colors.

Naked dancers with flowing scarves ... Art Deco.

I agree with Linda, a piicture of the whole lamp , well lit, against a clean vackground, would be nice.

And have you looked for a maker's mark? Check EVERY inch of it, with good light and a magnifying glass.

I have never heard of sand paint on wire mesh, but it makes sense; the light would pick up on the sand crystals and make it glittery.

Looks very "Roycraft" to me, which is solidly Craftsman. I second Lazy's advice....look for a signature....perhaps entwined in the design on the base.

Thank you everyone for commenting. Tonight I am going to go over this thing very carefully for a signature and let everyone know what I find. What's so funny to me is that while I don't think the lamp is of any value really, I still have not seen another one with that type of shade ever... Oh well:)

Here is some info on the Deco wire mesh shades, and they are creating revival wire mesh shades. If you google 1920's lamp with wire mesh shade you can find many examples.

Look for a Rembrandt company mark.
