Painting over Wood Paneling thats has been previously painted?

I have searched the forums and found LOTS of advice on painting fake wood paneling. But I need to paint over fake wood paneling that already has at least two coats of paint on it... I am a renter and while it is great the landlord is ok with painting, the previous tenants painted over the paneling with a peach or beige type of colour. What would work best for colour and proctuct type to cover my walls. I'm will to pay good money to make it look good as my rent isn't expensive and I would like to continue my stay but would like it more suitable to my style. Colours I like are french grape or any thing that would stand out and pop with a white trim, any advice? Also if i don't have anywhere to move furniture could i just cover it with drop canvas if i move all the furniture towards the center of the room?
