Morning Squidy..What pot size would I recommend? Do you mean after your palm is mature? I'm 'guessing' 10". One of my palms, 3 varieties in one pot, have been in the same 10" container 10+ years. It's stands 3-4' tall, exceedingly rootbound. But, don't transfer your seedlings in a pot this size.. Squig, palms are slow-growing. Last year I bought a variegated Palm, 'can't recall its type right now,' that I potted in a tree pot..The diameter is approximately 4", length/height 18". In a years time, it grew 3 new leaves..lol..I hope its roots are growing. 'love variegated plants.' I bought two other small/seedling palms this spring; both are in tree pots, which may or may not survive. But I want my palms to grow taller. If you want yours 'X' high, repot according to rootball size. Usually 1-2 sizes larger than the rootball. After roots are established, a 4" pot should do for a time. Gradually, 'as roots continue growing,' increase pot size until your Palm is in a 10" pot. Since you don't want your palm too tall/wide, keep roots snug by keeping underpotted. OR, you can always prune roots and leaves to desired height. But, we're jumping the gun..lol..Palms are unlike annuals... germinate in days, and ready for a 4-6" pot in mere weeks.. lol Oh great, not a year..Did you use bottom-heat to speed up germination? The reason I asked...I recently received Bottle Palm seeds..'Bottle Palm plant is super expensive.' I'm waiting for Begonia seeds to arrive from Austrailia, then sowing together. Time probably differs according to palm type, but it's said, some seeds can take up to a year to germinate. Since I thought yours took a year confirmed length of time correct. A YEAR!! I'd rather not wait that long..lol. Roots are important. Without roots there wouldn't be leaves. Don't peak..lol. Let them do their thing w/o disturbing roots. People who peak usually lose their plants. lol. Western Window..Most Fan-type palms require bright/direct sun; other palms scorch. They don't need as much humidity, either.. There's a guy in Chicago, Il, another in Canada, who grow Windmil Palms in their back yards, year round. Do you have a cool room in your house..'winter?' Toni

I have many requests for palm seeds so I'll place 10 000 seeds from pruned palms at the Gorge waterway park on both the Saanich and Esquimalt sides as I take a walk to see how the eucalyptus and palms are doing in the area. Palm enthusiasts will just grab the bluish seeds from park benches and tables when they take a Saturday or Sunday walk. I have thousands of seeds to get rid of every year and I know that southwestern British Columbia residents actually purchase these seeds. Let's put waste to use. I sometimes need to clear bracts that total 50 000 seeds from mature Windmill palms in Greater Victoria. I used to hand thousands of seeds to a palm grower who grew pups but he can't handle the volume of seeds.

You should buy some spanish moss and hang it on things for the summer months. They would make a nice "pirate theme look". You can get some at a good price on ebay. I tried some in my zone 7 last winter and most of it made it. I dont think it would make it in a zone 6 (or even well in a zone 7 during the average winter) so if you have an unheated garage it will do well in there with an occasional dip in a bowl of water (thats what I did with mine!). They dont like too much water in the winter and they dont seem to do too well indoors during the winter because of the heated air. Good luck! -Alex Good luck!

Even if some fronds may not look the best but are still mostly green, they are probably still doing their jobs and providing the plant with much needed energy from photosynthesis. Leaves, while they are pretty/ nice to look at, are an extremely important organ for any tree/ plant. Leaves also perform sevreal important functions on plants such as respiration and transpiration. If you ever get the chance to study plants / trees and all of their organs that help to make them function you will be amazed at the complexity. The palm you got from walmart, ericthehurdler got it right. Parlour Palm. The scientific name or botanic name is Chamaedorea Elegans. Those are a fantastic family of palms. Chamaedorea Elegans are in fact a SOLITARY palm. The reason they come how you got them, with many plants all clumped together is because growers often just germinate 10-20 or so seeds in a pot, and poof, you have a 'plant'. But, what you in fact have in that pot, is probably 10-20 small individual palms. It is up to you if you wish to separate them out. Often in the past what I have done is separated out the 1-3 largest ones and left the others to grow more. Also another thing that can, and does happen is that some of them may eventually die off. Personally, I find a single one of these palms in a pot by itself more appealing, espeically when they get older. I have a few, and one of them I got from a pot similar to yours. It was the largest, but still a young plant with no trunk. It now has about 7 to 10 leaves, has shed about 6 leaves, and has about 4 inches of clear trunk on it and is taking on the classic palm tree appearance. Mine is about 4 years old now, (the amount of time I have had it) but it is probably more like 6 years old in total. They grow fairly SLOW. They are probably one of, if not THE easiest palms to take care of. Virtually bullet proof. Very hard to over / underwater them, though I would err on the side of underwatering them because they can handle that easily, and also do not need tons of light. You can successfully grow one of these in a north facing window that gets hardly any direct sun with no problem. In fact, since they are an understory palm that grows only several feet or so high on the forest floor, they prefer mainly indirect or very filtered light, and NOT direct sunlight. Direct sunlight can burn the leaves. I have had one burn on me with just one day's exposure to full sun. Also, this palm, and all the other palms in its genus (Chamaedorea) are mainly jungle palms, so many prefer the lower light conditions, somewhat elevated humidity, and fairly warm temps. Definitely NOT cold hardy. That said, there are some that can HANDLE some abuse, and the palm that you have gotten is one of those palms. Anyway Best of luck with both of your palms!
