I am getting way overpriced quotes on AC ts the TRANE tam 7 trash ?

well my house needs a five ton hvac replaced. got some cheaper quotes for a Lennox air system are their ser 15 sytems any good. the r6050 or whatever they are. now I have had several trane dealers out and some won't sell me a tam 7 at all. Some say there is NO problem with it they all want to sale me two state condenser and variable speed air handlers. numerous people are trashing the tam 7 air handler saying it leads air out the front and even has plastic in the front panal. huh? well I am getting quoted for an xr 15 trane condenser with tam7 lowest price about $9300 with ten years parts and labor. with a 625 dollar rebate from the local electric company for the unit.

for a trane 15 with a gam5 ( construction tract housing unit not for public ) I am being given a price of $8700 dollars with no rebate ........... now I see the xr 15 is being phased out so I presume they get a discount on that so I fell even though other quotes are two or three thousand more I am getting and everyone in this town SAN ANTONIO,
TX is getting major ripped off on overpriced hvac systems from EVERY TRANE dealer and American standard, rheem rudd, lennox, sears, byrant, carrier or anybody........... any comments or suggestions. should I avoid the xr15 and should I avoid the tam 7 and should I just go take a hvac course and wait and install the unit myself because they are all way overpriced in this town................ one guy is even using somebody's else's license and even has no dba with the state comptroller.......... it is a major scam artist racket in this town and talk about pressure sales........... well most flip through scenes on their tablet and say yes or no........... if no they click off the screen and leave with NO quotes left on anything . you have to demand a hard copy quote and then they never sign a name anyone can read and often the license number may indeed be someone else's if you go look it up. worse than used car salesmen in this town .............. been doing my due diligence for three weeks and about seen everybody in town to no avail as far as finding any decent hvac's in this town . Perhaps the most important line item of quote, (the labor warranty) I do not see. I encouage you as consumer to strongly consider new system reliability along with system efficiency when selecting. Trane equipment includes parts warranty only, not labor warranty. Trane labor warranty is available at additional cost. Also, I encourage you to read and make very sure you understand the small print of labor warranty terms. Don't assume, unless stated, that the labor warranty is comprehensive. Labor warranties sometimes include the labor cost of replacing a component but exclude the cost of freon, the cost of a truck roll for a service call, etc. I emphasize labor warranty because the price to consumer of labor to replace a failed HVAC component can easily dwarf the price of the failed component. I speak of this from limited experience. As consumer, I researched 3 years ago, for replacement HVAC system. I read this msg board extensively and chose to have installed 2 Trane XR13 systems. I chose "simplier systems" in favor of reliability banking heavily on Trane quality & reliability reputation. Less than 3 years after installation one system experienced evap. Coil failure (i.e. leak) and while coil part covered by warranty, labor to install is not warranty covered and cost me a few dollars less than $1,200. I wrote on this msg. board critically of Trane reliability and of the pain I felt from the expense of relacing a Finally, other msg. boards are available providing additional insight into Trane (and competitor's hardware) customer satisfaction regarding reliability. Educate yourself to increase the probability of equipment and installation that will satisfy your needs for performance & reliability.

Yes I absolutely agree with you nothing is perfect, with any HVAC system, or with any house hold appliance as a matter of fact. I have had 3 installations in 10 years, one was so bad and wouldn't pass code that I forced the installer to remove and reimburse me, that's what brought me to American Standard, the first unit was TAM 7 and I had no problems, sold that house and moved into my current house so when it came time I used the same installer and upgraded to the TAM 9. Little did I know that quite a bit of change happened in the company and the product, goes to show you that you always need to do your homework regardless as things change over time. If I had to do it again I would most likely go with Carrier but I would need to do my homework. The coils are bad, there is galvanic corrosion everywhere due to the use of dissimilar metals, I know this for a fact as I worked in the offshore oil and gas businesses for over 20 years designing and manufacturing the electrical, optical and hydraulic connection systems and have seen my fair share just as I sure you have seen yours. I can only imagine what you have seen thru the years and I'm sure many left you scratching your head and saying what the... I know I see it all the time and it baffles me too...

@mike_home: I acknowledge I don't know much about SEER and EER and such. I thought it was 14 SEER because the unit's nameplate says XL-1400. The invoice covering the GP CheckMe! efficiency test is hard to read, but it looks like it shows 'New 11.29 / 8.95 Actual' whatever that means. It's my understanding that GP normally pays for up to 2 lb. of Freon to bring a unit up to par for the efficiency test. I didn't know about that and had already had my unit recharged before scheduling the test. The servicing tech gave it an extra boost to make it last a little longer in view of the continuing leak, and so the service tech who performed the efficiency test actually removed Freon to bring it down to proper charge level. The tech and his boss insisted that the charge had to be at the proper level before the test could be performed, so no, I did not have the option to have the test performed without having the proper Freon charge.
