Entrance to Sun Room - Open or separate room?

This is the Houzz.com photo that the area was originally designed to replicate. Our layout appears to be a bigger space. This is where our concern lies.

Currently Drawn Sun Room - Open to kitchen and great room

Previously drawn sun room with wall separating room.

We like the idea of having the sun room open to get more natural light into the kitchen area but feel that this may be too open and just be a large open space. There are 4' wide overhangs that may limit some natural sunlight. The windows to the covered porch/sun room are the focal point of the interior so want to be able to get the full appreciation but don't want to feel like we are in a gym either. Any suggestions or comments are greatly appreciated.

ok...don't know where you are but sun rooms get really warm!! I was at my friend's home visiting and the sun room was actually too warm despite the fact she had a/c blasting. It never got comfortable enough for me. I would close it in my opinion.

Sunrooms can get really hot if they are facing south or west or don't have good overhangs like you do. It may be a bear to cool and heat. You could leave it open for now and you can always add a wall later if you think it is too open. The open plan is just longing for a large party with people wandering back and forth. However if it is meant as more of an "away" room then the wall is more appropriate.

Alternatively, you could leave a kitchen peninsula (without sink) there but omit the wall. That would give you a great place to put food and party stuff for a gathering in the sunroom. I think I like this idea the best of all since it still is open for parties and somewhat closed off for a sense of separation.

Below is the floorplan for the majority of the first floor. We're not sure how we want to separate the kitchen/dining room/great. We want it to feel open, but each space to be defines as well. We were thinking of putting 18" headers. We have 10' ceiling so it should still feel open. I really wanted arches, but the arches won't line up. The kitchen and dining room would be separated by one big arch and the great room and dining room 2 smaller arches. Would that look wierd? We also struggle with how ot separat the great room/hall and staircase. The staircase leads up to 2 bedrooms which my 6 yo is going to use. And downstairs to the bassement. We were thinking of making that wall opposite solid instead of half. And putting a gallery of photos. And advice on how to separate spaces? Here is a link that might be useful:

Aktillery - Thank you! Annie - Your home is lovely but the columns do not fit the style of my house. Our home isn't craftsman but Texas Hill Country. It takes inspiration from a mixture of German Farmhouse and Spanish Hacienda using simple lines and local materials. Tina - Thank you and I agree. Tibbrix - I should have added the beam inspiration pics to begin with! Pal - Yep, that would look odd. A wall will have to be added behind that cabinet. Missy - The pictures probably aren't conveying the openness of the room. The dining room all by itself is 17x11. That is a 9ft table. As far as changing the paint color at the corner - I just don't like that look. And to those I didn't mention - thank you for your comments as well! So I discussed the project with DH this morning and he's on-board. We will have to bring the wall out about 3 feet on both sides for balance (like Fori suggested). Surprisingly DH said he could go either way with a big beam or bringing down a header and a trimmed opening. It would be more straight forward that way but I really dig the look of the big beam. OK. I'm always hesitant to post shots of my house, because it's so difficult to photograph such small spaces without it looking like Barbie's Palace of Clutter -- but I know how hard it is to get images of what paint colors really look like. The dining room is Hubbard Squash on top, BM Affinity Buttered Yam on bottom (the Roycroft Adobe was too burgundy-colored); looking into the living room which is Roycroft Vellum. (For some reason the Hubbard Squash always looks peachy in photos, it really isn't.) My study when it was Morris Room Green, looking into White Hyacinth hallway: My study freshly painted in Buckram Binding, not sure what I think of it in there yet (I live in terror of 1950's chalky peachy off-white), but it makes the room twice as big and blends very well with the other off-whites: Kitchen in Antique Yellow (very similar to your Bungalow Gold) looking into breakfast room in White Hyacinth. I know my trim is lighter than yours (we had to strip everything of 10 layers of paint and re-shellac), but perhaps this helps just a bit.

Just looks like only 1 person can sit on it the way it is! Unless all the pillows are removed. Don't get me wrong, I love decorative pillows. I have 5 on my lounger sofa. Everyone but me takes at least 1 or 2 pillows off to sit/lounge on it. If you are ok with people taking the pillows off, then it's ok. But maybe have a basket on each side of the sofa for storing them.

Don't wall off all those windows....it will be glorious! I honestly doubt you would even use the room much if it was separated from the rest of the great room. Check with your HVAC people if you have concerns about heating, but I have seen many rooms like this that were lovely and not too warm at all.

I like the option of my Sunroom also being my "Away Room" or quiet room. Closing it off or making that open area a sliding wall allows you to do that.

DMIL has a sunroom with glass sliders. So it can be closed off for quiet space when someone else is watching tv, or to listen to music without waking the household. But it still lets in all the natural light. The sliders are typically left open.
