Week 7 - 15 in 15 in 15

I can't believe we are on week 7 already. I still want to tackle a few closets upstairs but that depends on how hot it gets, the upstairs is not the coolest place in the house.

I have a drawer here in the office that is full of old papers. I just tried to get something out and it is so heavy and full that this may be my next project. I also have a shirt box with memory type papers I bought home when we cleaned my mom's house out after her death. This was in 2009 and I need to sort this out. This may be a paper week.

Yesterday I filled two garbage bags with clothes of mine that no longer fit or I no longer like or wear. This week I would also like to clean out the shelf above my computer. Full of old software, papers, books, etc. And I have several cabinets and drawers in the shelving of our TV stand full of notebooks, papers, etc. I have been avoiding it but if the mood hits me, I may try to do at least some of that!

What a coincidence as it is going to be paper week here too. I have a lot of stuff still from my grandmother and I do not want to say how long I have had it. It is old letters, other papers etc. It is time to let it go as no one down the line is going to want any of it. Hard to do, but it is time.

I'm falling a bit behind the count of "Out The Door", BUT... I did manage to clear off a wire shelving rack this weekend and had some small empty boxes and plastic baskets for a sorting station. All tape measures go in one box (I've found 5 so far - remember, DH was a cabinetmaker - there was at least one everywhere so he could find one) All rechargeable batteries are in a box (with the charger(s) - woohoo!) Rulers (12", 18", yardsticks, architectural scales, engineering scales, metric rulers, calipers, and the list goes on). Scissors!!! I found 6!!!!! (And why is it a pair of scissors - never mind, it's probably the same logic as a pair of pants.) And why is it I can never find "them" when I really need one aka a pair. Tape (Scotch tape, masking tape, duct tape, double stick tape, carpet tape, 12 colors of electrical tape, 6 colors of surveyor's tape, etc.) 9,000 paper clips. (Well, 10,000 were free from the office supply store when I bought X amount 20 years ago. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.) And 195,000+ staples (normal staples, staple gun staples, staples for the OTHER type of staple gun, staples for the OTHER, OTHER staple gun that I have yet to find that I know is here somewhere, staples for the saddle stitcher, etc.) Really. At least they are all together...please don't breed like rabbits.

I started in the kitchen because I knew I wouldn't have much sentimental attachment to that stuff! Pantry cabinet before and after. Discarded a bunch of out of date products and discovered we have 8 cans of baked beans! The whole top shelf is now empty. I also went through the cabinet above the pantry where I have cookbooks and misc. stuff stored. Threw away a lot of recipes clipped from magazines that I never used and discovered a box of powdered banana daquari mix from 1994. And I cleaned out the drawer under the oven and trashed or donated items from it. Now it is nearly empty. Here is my car loaded with stuff that is good enough to donate. I guess I forgot to pack my discarded cookbooks. Marcia

I did pretty well last week (Week 5 - I never know whether to post on that one or this new one). Cleaned out the linen closet and took a huge box of towels and sheets to my vet's office Saturday. Plus a few self-warming cat/dog blankets. Those are great, as they reflect the animal's body heat - snuggly warm with no electricity required. Took one pickup truck load of old electronics to recycling. Have another load ready to go - maybe later this week, I'll get a friend with a truck to help me load up and git it gone. Decided the porch umbrella was waaaay past repair, so it's in the trash for pickup. Sent my lawn tractor and Gator off to be serviced. Now that I have a temporarily empty spot in the shed for two weeks until the equipment comes back, I set up some tables on sawhorses, and started sorting DH's tools. A friend lost everything in a house fire the day after DH died (he, his wife, and two kids got out with their pajamas and literally nothing else - even their cars melted in the garage). He would love some of the extra tools and I'd like to be able to find the ones I have! Plus some other kitchen things for their new house when that is rebuilt. Won't be for a while, but that's OK, I'll box them up for him. Still a long way to go, but a little bit every week helps a lot. It's not so overwhelming :-)

I don't comment because I am not living up to the promise I made myself to declutter on a continual basis - but I do read each of your posts as I need all the incentive I can get. I feel like such a loser when it comes to this area of my life. I know it's just "stuff" and of no consequence to anyone but me; however, this stuff has taken on a life of its own and what it signifies to me - my mother - now gone four years and my grandmother, gone 25 years (her things I inherited once Mom passed). If they weren't connected to these things it would be so much easier to let it all go. I never dreamed at this stage of my life I would be faced with these decisions because outside of some boxed up hobbies that have gone by the wayside, I use pretty much whatever I have in my home (husband's garage is another story). Anyway, bravo to all who have turned the corner and are making great headway. I'm not giving up on myself, I'll get there eventually, just not on the timeline I would have liked. To anyone who may eventually be facing this same situation may I suggest that while your parents are alive and you are aware of the things you will inherit, write down all the items you know you don't want and where you can take them to be sold, donated, etc., BEFORE you actually receive them because once they are in your home the guilt kicks in and it's a tougher hill to climb. I received excellent advice on this subject from several of you already so it's on me to do the right thing. As I reread this I think maybe I need some counseling if at this same time next year I am still dealing with this situation.

OK week 7 is done. I know if I wasn't committed to the 15 in 15 in 15 I would probably put things off again. I went through my Mom's box of memory items and found some interesting things. I made copies of things for my cousin who is into genealogy and have it ready to mail. The things I'm keeping are filed away. My desk drawer had lots of old bank statement and insurance claim statements. I kept some papers for my husband to look through but most are ready to burn. Feels great.

Good for you! I haven't done anything with my paper yet, but after saying I would, I know I'll do it! Even if it's at the last minute! :)

Anyone need 3.5" disks? I unloaded a bunch of them from the shelf above my computer. I planned to review what was on the disks until I realized that none of my computers have 3.5" disk drives anymore! I guess I haven't missed what was on them, so they're gone. I also got rid of a bunch of unneeded papers. I found a birthday card my Mom sent me in 2004, with a check for $50 still in it, uncashed. She passed a few years ago, so I'll keep the card and check in my saved papers. I didn't get to the TV stand, so that will be a job for the future.
