Red Ring Milkweed Seed Pod beginning!!!

I am so excited as this is the first time my wild Red Ring Milkweed has ever begun a seed pod naturally. Something has already bitten into it from below so I doubt it will survive but still, such a happy occurrence for me. I think I transplanted this plant in 2009 so it's taken this long to see a naturally occurring seed pod begin to form.

Below you can see the underneath and the damage that's already been done to it. In fact, I couldn't even see those aphids on the tip until I uploaded the photo! Need to go back out there and see if I can get them off. Trouble is, I'm getting so un-coordinated I'll probably knock the llttle growth off the plant if I try goofing around with it. Darn bugs! ... ~Mary

Do you have any old nylons you could tie around it, or be ready for the next one? I have a ton of those tulle wedding bags with drawstrings to help close them. They are great for keeping track of future seeds.

Martha, thanks for the suggestion. I do have some of those little tulle wedding bags. I'll try one or an old nylon. I was able to get three beginning pods year before last by trying my hand at manual germination. None made it to maturity because of the bugs or they were just not very strong. I did try to protect the pods by covering them but it didn't help. I worried that maybe I damaged them by trying to protect them. I'll give it another try as this little pod is probably already damaged by bugs. Without trying, it will most likely be a goner.

@Perennialfan: If the smaller red bugs look like those in the second picture down on the right-hand side of the link I posted, they are immature milkweed bugs. MBs have an incomplete metamorphosis (meaning that the young look very much like the adults). @Ken: Milkweed bugs are in the order hemiptera, all of which have sucking mouthparts. This order of insects are commonly referred to as "true bugs" and includes such insects as aphids, woolly adelgids, leafhoppers, planthoppers, cicadas, stinkbugs and tens of thousands of others. I don't know whether they're called "true bugs" so as to distinguish them from the term "bug" to describe any insect, or whether there's another reason ... but I'm sure it's a lot easier for most people to handle than "hemiptera" (which really isn't so difficult, once you get used to it). Considering their apparent promiscuity, I don't know if any bugs are really true ;-) @Echinaceamaniac: You've sure got that right! I've seen the milkweed in our park take a lot of abuse from nature ... and still it thrives!

http://www.mailordernatives.com/ They sell redring milkweed plants here. They said they will have some plants available in November or next April or May. I bought a clasping milkweed plant and it was healthy. I will order from them again. They don't sell seeds though.

Just an update on the Red Ring Seed pod. It is growing and looking healthy. I put it in a little tulle bag (thanks, Martha). A few more days and I think I'll need to find something larger as the length of the little pod is expanding daily.

After so many years of watching this little plant for any signs of seed pods, I'm so excited to have this one naturally occurring pod to observe. Gives me hope that one day, more of us will be able to share seeds of this stunning milkweed.
