Nutsedge or quackgrass? Big Pictures

Location: Minnesota

Trying to find a way to controll this. Have about 4 acres and it's taken over some spots. Would like to limit it from taking over everywhere.

I find with quack the best defense is a good offense. Take good care of your lawn and it will get choked out. But notwithstanding... when I first sodded my yard I had some spots of quackgrass that came from the nursery. I was told to mow my grass very short in the spot with quack. The quack rows faster / higher than the lawn, so using a string soaked in non-selective roundup carefully run the string over the longer quack. This avoids killing the rest of your lawn.

I don't know the name, just wanted to add my picture. I brought some home last week, to try and identify, too. Also growing in a wet ditch. I'd never seen any this big before either. There were a bunch of them growing together. It really was striking. A beautiful plant. You mention it looking like goldenrod from a distance. The heads though dry now and falling apart, are still a beautiful golden brown color.

Nutsedge will have a triangular stem at the base. Quackgrass has fleshy rhizomes that are very pointed at the end. Nutsedge will have small tuber-like nutlets along the rhizome that look like "mini-potatoes". Both are nasty in that just pulling them, the nutsedge leaves the nutlets in the ground and a new plant will emerge from each nutlet; quackgrass acts the same because any piece of rhizome left in the ground will regenerate a new plant. yes, def. not sedge.

based on the tall step with many leaves on photo 2...i'd say not quack either. However some of the other photos do look fairly Quacky... Often a photo of it growing in the yard helps me more.

Not sure it is that relevant - it looks like a grassy perennial IMO - so a selective herbicide is difficult. Can paint with a Roundup like product with q-tip or brush - slow long term battle. Or get a hold of Tenacity ($$$) a selective herbicide that has some effectiveness on grassy weeds (if Quack however...it likely won't kill, but will injure it a touch).

Do you know other weed like plants that have a root base like quack?

I bet if I can injure the quack enough to slow it down I'd believe the kbg might choke it out though.
