Severly deformed Cayenne plant

What in the world is causing this?

I have two Long Slim Cayenne plants in an swc, planted a little over a month ago - they were both healthy and the same size at the time. As you can see, the one in the back now is healthy and growing well, 3X the size of the deformed one in the front.

Since they're growing in the same container etc and the one plant is healthy, I'm having a hard time believing it's a nutrient deficiency.

I've checked it for aphids, sprayed it w/ some soap & water based organic insecticides in case its a pest I'm not seeing, but nothing has helped. I have 3 other identical scw's growing a total of six more pepper plants right next to this one, and they look excellent. So that's 7 healthy vibrant plants, planted identical conditions, looking great, and then there's this deformed one.

I'm debating just pulling this one out, and sticking another one in its place. Its a little late in the season to do that here in Ohio, but I'm not sure this plant is going to recover.

Any advice?

I have my garden covered with about an 8 inch layer of leaves. My plants are in tubes that reach to the dirt level. This seams to really work well. I can't tell you whether it is better or this is a good year. If you mulch, the pepper plant stem has an increased chance of succumbing to damp-off even a large plant. Make sure you stem dries between watering. Pepper and egg plants are in 5 gallon bottomless buckets for roots to pass. watermelon are in bottomless one gallon food tins. blueberry plants are in 28 in bottomless boxes. Getting rid of scale and then planting them in the garden

So let's start by asking a question - where did the scale come from in the beginning? From the environment...from the air, from outdoors, "out of the everywhere into the here." Meaning, the bugs are already around you. You did well to control them on your houseplants, now don't worry so much. If you want to put the plants outside, go right ahead. There are predators out there that control them most of the time. The reason you saw ants in your plants (oh gosh, I said a funny) is that the ants were feeding on the honeydew excreted by the scale, much like aphids, aphids and scale being in the same order of insects. Yes, you should discard the potting medium the infested plants were in, because of the possible presence of eggs. Also the pots that you used should be thoroughly washed and disinfected with a dilute solution of bleach. You should do this with old pots before putting in new plants anyway.

Perhaps you have red Marconi or Monster Bells. Thes peppers get up to 8-10 inches long. Do tdhey taste like bell peppers? I don't know why some peppers get gnarly and deformed, I guess that it's just a pepper thing. If your peppers taste like bells then you grew some nice ones if not you probably got the wrong plants. This happens frequently with peppers for some reason.

That happens fairly frequently in my garden, Laetitia. I always figure it's a result of wide temps swings that get fans growing quickly, then stalls them, then gets them growing again. I do as you do and just free the stuck leaves. The leaves usually straighten out to some degree, though they will continue to look rather crumpled. The "stuckness" itself hasn't affected bloom or the bloom stalks that I've been able to tell, though the same weather patterns that cause leaf sticking can cause stunting of stalks. Laurie
