curly deformed bell peppers

Hi! This is my first year growing bell peppers and I'm a little confused. All of the peppers on my plants are very long and skinny, some as long as 10 inches! Whats even weirder is that there are a few that are so curled up that they look like someone tied them in a knot! Can anyone give me a reason for this?

They're not bell peppers. Maybe some type of cayenne. I'd say that the tags got switched at the nursery or there was a seed mix-up. Happens all the time. Post a photo if you can here or in the hot pepper forum and someone may be able to give you an ID. HTH

Cayennes and Anaheims both are long. I'm betting that the tags were mixed up when you purchased them. If you have pictures, we could help ID your mystery pepper.

I'm not sure where you live, but I have a few peppers in the ground, and they get attacked big time by leaf miners and spider mites. Spider mites are easily dispersed with a blast of water. Leaf miners are tough. They don't hurt the plant, but they make the leaves look pretty ugly. They leave trails all over the leaves. Thrips are also a problem. I'm not such a believer in organic. I really hate those pests, so I use Bayer Advanced systemic pest control often, and it works well. We also spray with an orchard spray purchased at Home Depot. The soap water works well for aphids. I use that a lot on my roses and peppers. No aphids.

I have found over the years that types all plant types will produce an occasional fruit which will have some deformity. When this happens, it can make for the most interesting conversations... to say the least. If it were me I'd treat it as the the other fruit and see what comes of it.

The curly top virus has a very large host range that includes many weeds and vegetables such as tomato, potato, and pepper. The internodes of infected plants shorten, resulting in extremely stunted plants. The upper portion of infected plants resembles a rosette or small flower bouquet. Leaves turn yellow or light green and may roll upward. Fruit are small and remain upright instead of drooping. Plants infected at an early age may die. @diemoldau123 I'm sorry to see your basil so stressed. I have had my sweet basil plant grow to 2ft in height (sometimes higher). With regular pinching and trimming, I get huge bushes. I'm attaching a picture of my beds below. I begin pinching when I get between 3-5 sets of leaves and go out virtually every week to hack at my plants. Within 3 months I have these massive bushes. Mind you I live in west africa and have plenty of sunlight but I am growing in regularly mulched soil mixed with compost. This photo was taken unfortunately during a period where I failed to pinch off the flowerheads and the leaves had begun to shrink. (Yes that's catnip tucked in there and aubergines too). but each bush is from a single plant. Hope this helps motivate someone. My catnip and mint are doing so well now....I will share those another time. Good luck with your other plants. I pray they are as kind to you as mine are to me. Bless

If you bought from a nursery, call and ask which other pepper varieties they sold this spring.

If you bought from a big box store: many obtain their seedlings from Bonnie Plants. You can look up their 2011 pepper varieties here (click on "Vegetable Quick Find" at the top right):

Perhaps you have red Marconi or Monster Bells. Thes peppers get up to 8-10 inches long. Do tdhey taste like bell peppers? I don't know why some peppers get gnarly and deformed, I guess that it's just a pepper thing. If your peppers taste like bells then you grew some nice ones if not you probably got the wrong plants. This happens frequently with peppers for some reason.
