Squashed leaves in the iris fan

Looks like I will have a pretty good bloom season, with a few SDB buds showing, and ALLAH (I think it is an IB,not sure) leading the way again this year.

But I have a strange problem on alot of the iris: Leaves have gotten stuck inside the fans causing some iris to look like stunted malformed lumps!

I have been 'freeing' the leaves from the centers of these fans, but I wonder does anybody know why this happened? Does this mean the plant is not going to be able to produce a bloom stalk? The 'freed' iris still look pretty bad: crumpled and misshapen, with poor growth, but definitely not dead or rotting. I was thinking of just cutting off the fan cleanly on the severly deformed ones to give them a second chance.

Any suggestions?

That happens fairly frequently in my garden, Laetitia. I always figure it's a result of wide temps swings that get fans growing quickly, then stalls them, then gets them growing again. I do as you do and just free the stuck leaves. The leaves usually straighten out to some degree, though they will continue to look rather crumpled. The "stuckness" itself hasn't affected bloom or the bloom stalks that I've been able to tell, though the same weather patterns that cause leaf sticking can cause stunting of stalks.

It is usually associated with wide swings in temperature. The leaves grow quickly when warmed and then slowing suddenly when chilled creating a catch that accordions the fan. Just pull the fan free, it will son grow out of it. Mike

Hi Ken, I think you have probably gotten rid of it if you removed the affected leaves. I am cutting the affected irises that have already bloomed right to the ground to remove all of the bad foliage. I don't know if bleach does anything to kill the leaf spot- so I don't think you should bother. If it returns next year you could try a fungicide. I imagine cleaning the pruners is prudent (I have so much this year I don't think it would help me).

There's a borer that overwinters in the leaves so they say to discard foliage. I've never gotten borers in my iris and don't know if they can also affect other plants. I do get brown spots on the leaves which doesn't seem to do much harm except for making them look bad. I'm going to try cutting mine back this fall and trashing all the leaves to see if they will look healthier next year. I've got to do that with my phlox too since some of those had phlox bugs which also winter over in foliage. I haven't priced straw lately. I bet it's high and maybe hard to find.
