Question on backsplash glass tile size
Comments (14)I came very close to installing vertically, but ultimately decided to echo the horizontal shape of the backsplash space. I think the vertical installation is more modern (the WZ site has some great pics of that), and I wouldn't hesitate if that's the look you are going for. Our tile is rough-edged and just slightly iridescent, with grout that matches the green of the tile (pics below). Originally, I didn't think I wanted iridescence, but its very subtle and makes the surface shimmer when direct sunlight hits it (and therefore more visually interesting to me). I think the glossy is slightly easier to keep clean (ie Windex), but I like the matte look too. The rough edge, combined with the color *in* the glass rather than a colored backing definitely gives it a more handmade look. I am shopping for glass tile for a bathroom now, and I definitely know that I wouldn't want the rough edge tile on something my hands or feet will touch regularly. I don't think we used mastic for the installation, but I can't remember the exact type of thinset the installer used. Maybe make a visit to the John Bridge forums to get some advice from the pros. Good luck! Here is a link that might be useful: Pics...See MoreHow to make your own tile and back-splash (pic heavy)
Comments (25)I'm not sure how I came across this post, I think it was displayed on the right side and I clicked on it being intrigued by the tile making. I was at one time interested in working with papercrete and hypertufa. But after enlisting my brother, who wasn't as enthusiastic, and my niece, who poured cement down my laundry room sink, which original to the house had lasted 70 years, and ruining three blenders, my interest waned. True to form, if I come upon difficulty in a project, I think of it as a sign for me not to continue. And really, after all these years of trying various crafts that result in crap, I should know better. I also should have known better than to ask my brother, who always says it can't be done to any of my unique design ideas. And I should have known better than to ask my niece, who once stayed up all night before having to drive to LA for an art show, cutting mat after mat after measuring once, twice, sometimes ten times, but always coming out with the wrong size. I think we both have math dyslexia. I should video us trying anything crafty to see where we go wrong. I think both of us having ADHD might have something to do with it. Sorry for the backstory and run on sentences. So, I just wanted to see if you continued with your venture. And to say sorry for whatever tragedy occurred to cause you to have to move to Florida. Not that there is anything wrong with Florida, but it isn't Panama. Which is one of my favorite places in the western hemisphere. I hope no one is upset that I brought up a seven year old post....See MoreWhich backsplash do you like? Other ideas for contemporary look?
Comments (5)I like the green and the cream coloured tiles, but not the grey tiles from option A. Option B is far too dark for my taste. I think I would try to find a backsplash that is lighter than your floor and cabinets. Darkest colour in the 'splash no darker than the doors. I do like the glass-stone combination, that does read modern to me. HTH, Petra...See MoreNeed opinion and advice on sloppy glass subway tile backsplash install
Comments (6)You know bad work when you see it - and this is it! Upon arrival and finding out he was doing glass tiles, why did he not leave to get the proper cutting tools? Red flag. And yes, typically there are spacers, and tiles are set before grouting, so you could have been consulted about placement etc, and inspected prior to grouting. Another red flag. Someone who complains when they do work in your home, isn't going to do a good job. Yet another red flag. I learned the hard way in doing home renovations if you don't speak up, people try to get away with a lot, or won't do work up to your standards - unless you have a great general contractor who shares your same high standards. I think as the homeowner you have to be proactive; you always have to inspect and ask questions, during the job and definitely before you pay anything - or hold out a certain percentage until you inspect finished work. I guess you can try and dispute the payment, if you used a credit card and then request that the contractor to remedy the situation. Of if you paid the big box store, dispute the charge with them until you get satisfaction. Keep going up the food chain! I've heard so many bad stories about big box store work, tough lesson. I hope you get it resolved. Keep us posted....See Morepalimpsest
