My Sum & Substance that I just split looks different...
Comments (4)Ok here some more on Tall vs Short. I had many extra hosta after I put in a new hosta bed last year. I divided every plant in 1/2 put 1/2 of the potted plants in full sun for friends, relatives & neighbors . Mean while I put the other half in 95% shade behind my barn for my future new hosta bed. My bro comes by last week-end to pick up some freebees :) He goes out back & gets a two ft tall Northern Exposure & An Alligator Shoes I had been to weak to carry. The shade plants were a whole foot taller than the sunny grow sibs .....larger deeper colored leaves. Now the sunny grown plants were muted in color but many more eyes after just one year in the different locals....See MoreIs This HVX on my Sum & Substance?
Comments (8)The leaf in the first pics does not seem to have collapsed tissue, but little, rough, raised patches. The coloring on the other leaf just looks strange--a long rectangular area in which the veins are dark... I'm definitely not ready to toss this one in any case. I will be keeping a close eye on it though. Hmmm... Maybe I need another one to replace this one... (just in case, ya know :)...See MoreSum & Substance
Comments (12)Les, first I did not agree that the hosta Alycia is showing is S&S, it is dark green and shiny, that's why Ken brought up Vim and Vigor which is much darker. But then I remember that my S&S were darker when they just unfurled, so perhaps it is a S&S. Alycia is in zone 3/4. So I showed my V&V which has the same color as Alycia's pictures show. My plant seems to be the same age so it shows and has the same vein count of 10 pairs (you also have to count partials). Now, young plants usually have a lower vein count, so having only 10 vein pairs is acceptable for a young plant when matures might have 14, 16 or 17 counting everything. Both V&V and S&S have higher vein counts of 16 or 17 when mature per the hosta library. Several of us counted 14 on mature S&S plants. As I read there would be more veins on the underside of leaves, but I did not contort myself to look at those. Anyway, not being an expert, Alycia's picture show a plant of the S&S family, and the vein counts support that. When leaves turn gold/yellow, then it is an acceptable S&S, and they grow slowly. Comments (13)Thank you SCG! I am glad to hear you have good experiences with Fundy Beauties/Hostageek, their prices are quite reasonable for their hosta collections! If I could go back in time, I would have exclusively bought a hosta collection from them. Unfortunately I started growing hostas before knowing about hvx, almost all of mine are already from big box stores. Perhaps one day when the symptoms show, I may similarity wipe them all and start fresh. At least I only have six varieties, it's not a big deal to remove them if needed....See Morejosephines167 z5 ON Canada
