Favorite variety of gardenia...?
Comments (21)for individual flower size and form, 'mystery' is my favorite (pic below). very large (6") flowers develop from long buds with large, glossy leaves. strong gardenia fragrance. once-bloomer in late may. with hydrangeas if the number of flowers is important, 'daisy' can be very showy in the landscape. typical gardenia fragrance from small flowers with single row of petals. once-bloomer in may. the only one that reblooms for me is 'august beauty' with blooms in late late may and smaller flush in late summer....See MoreGardenia 'Mystery', 'Miami Supreme', or 'Aime'?
Comments (7)I too suspect it's 'Aimee' but one online Gardenia source claims that it's 'Mystery' (5-6" blooms). It says that Aimee has 3- 5" blooms which made me doubt myself. I used to have an 'Aimee' and I remember her blooms being extremely large(6"-ish). I'd like to purchase another one but after seeing that aforementioned website, I starting wondering if maybe it's possible that my Gardenia could have been mislabeled. I badly want to buy a new plant so I just want to make sure it's the correct one. My old "Aimee", as big (6') and heavy(14" pot) as she was was stolen from me during the wee early hours of the morning from my front yard. Her fate I know not of! But its likely not good. She's a very finicky gal to have up north....See Morejasmine sambac varieties (pics)
Comments (66)Thanks Kemistry. My mother had been doing it that way but I was not sure like some say, you have to make sharp snips so that there's no room for insects to seep in and scissors don't make sharp cuts sometimes if the stem is sturdy. But if it's safe I am sure it's the best and most economical way. Did you mean to say that I can root a cutting right away without using any hormones? If it's that simple it's great since I can offer some to my friend who went crazy when she saw my flowers. Lastly, Will I need to keep the cutting in water overnight before I root it the next day? Thanks once again, SR...See MoreGardenias :Please Help identify Gardenia variety
Comments (5)I agree with the "hybrid" comment since all most likely are so similar in the shape and other qualities of the blooms , though some may tend to produce larger or fuller blooms under ideal growth conditions or even leaves may vary quite a bit in size perhaps depending on hybrid variety , but other than that I guess the modern use of DNA analysis may be the only surefire way to determining varieties that have no tags. Still not available of course as over the counter , DIY test kits for home us lol. Meanwhile unfortunately , my very old potted specimen has finally succumbed to my bad habit of over watering I'd guess , since though they tend to love "even" moisture , they hate soggy soil, especially during cooler winter months even indoors....See More- 8 years ago
