I usually don't repot immediately or not at all for 6 months until a nursery plant has a chance to acclimate. This tip is especially fitting for gardenia because they are very sensitive to temperature and enviornmental changes, and their leaves will turn yellow and drop. Are there anything different about the potting mix or with your treatment in the one that is yellowing you can think of? Gardenias like to be a little pot bound. If you overpotted too much (in relation to the size of the root ball), the shallow roots may grow slower and tend to get root rot because of the greater underutilized and wet area. And because Gardenia must have acidic but well-drained mix or the leaves turn yellow, the plant may die if from root rot. They are also sensitive to salts from fertilizers or hard water. Use rain water when you can. Add a tablespoon of vinegar to 2.0 gal tap water (lower acidity) if you are in a pinch. Gardenias do not like their roots disturbed. Transplant with least amt of disturbance. Leaves turning yellow and dropping due to changing growing conditions (potting mix, light, and temperature) is a common reaction for gardenia. There is nothing that needs to be done. The plant is still alive and with some minimal remaining leaves, the gardenia usually will rebound after a month or two. However, if you have curl dried up looking leaves right on the gardenia and not just dropping yellow leaves, it does not sound good. Usually that means some kind of root damage, and the gardnia usually goes downhill pretty quickly from there. Stop watering and out of strong sun for now. See if putting a clear dome or some kind of plastic cover over the plant to slow the upper moisture loss could make any difference and revive the plant. Good luck! Please let us know.

Looks like Gardenia augusta 'Veitchii'. Looks a bit sun burned. Although gardenias do best with lots of sun in cool climates, they will burn readily when thrown into the sun after comig out of a shaded greenhouse. We commonly call them simply "gardenia" although the old common name of Cape Jessamine is so romantic; "Cape" referring to the Cape of South Africa, where it was originally thought to have originated. Here are some things I notice: ⢠Small leaves ⢠Flowers are somewhat large ⢠Mass produced for grocery chain. It could possibly be an older, common variety so that may rule out the newer introductions such as Chuck Hayes or Frostproof It is probably Mystery Gardenia. The flower and leaf size ratio seems to match pictures of Myster I see online. It also bears some resemblance to my August Beauty, but the outer petals dont extend out like that in your pic and flowers on it are a little smaller.
