Have you thought about having a pull out on the other side, too? It would give you a lower shelf/storage, under the plumbing.

Have you considered putting all your pulls horizontal? That would eliminate the problem! I really thought that's what I would do in my new kitchen, but when I got the actual pulls with the actual cabinets, I didn't like the way it looked. Yours might look fantastic.

That said - I would put pulls on both doors, centered. It looks like you have nothing bot lower drawers in the vicinity (yea!), so they wouldn't look out of place. Having a horizontal pull on the trash and a vertical pull on the door would look odd (IMHO).

How about one of those latch things that pop the door/drawer out when you bump it? Both pulls could then be vertical but the trash one would be more decorative than functional.

AnnKH: Horizontal pulls on that base cabinet would work - I wondered if it would be awkward to have a horizontal pull there, if the trash pullout one was centered, as was the other one, but the cabinet beneath was just a regular cabinet, if you know what I mean. I'm not fond of the look of horizontal pulls on uppers, though others here have done it beautifully in their kitchens.

I put horizontal pulls below my sink because I wanted all horizontal pulls below the countertop. My trash pullout is actually on the far right in this photo. Maybe that would work for your under sink pullout?

How exciting Carrie! I like the look of how lavender drew them horizontally. Even if you have other base cabinets with the pulls mounted vertically, I think it will look fine being just on the sink cab. Especially since it looks like mostly drawers on that run. But definitatly do those two doors the same. I think you will easily get used to opening the left door from the middle as just a normal door hinging to the side. Can't wait to see the progress.

My trash pull out and the swing door next to it both have horizontal pulls, aligned with the pull on the middle drawer to the right. The red dot is to help us in finding the top master. There is also a toekick drawer underneath which is why the baseboard looks discontinuous.

I have an under sink trash pullout and I actually put the pull on it vertically like the rest of my door pulls. I have no trouble opening the trash pull out with the vertical pull. I have had this set up for four years now and it still works perfectly. My trash pullout is Reva-shelf's Soft Open-Soft Close slide system. It has a gas spring assisted Soft-Open which allows the unit to open smoothly and the Soft-Close shuts softly, even under the heaviest load.

Thanks you all so much. Scrappy - good to know that opening a hinged door from a top center horizontal pull feels fine, and badgergal - it's also good to know that the vertical pull works fine for opening a trash pull out. Sounds like it's an aesthetic decision more than anything else.

And, yes, agree totally that I want them both the same!

Texasgal47, my cabinets are custom from Dutchwood in Pennsylvania. There are several kitchens on this website by Dutchwood, all larger and more beautiful than mine. However, I do love my little jewel box, as I have come to think of it.

12crumbles, I have that electric trash opener for my pull out, and with the horizontal pull on it I just bump it with my thigh and it opens like magic. It also opens conventionally so that people do not get confused.

Scrappy, can you refer me to an electric opener? I was thinking of the purely mechanical ones that have been around forever. The ones where you can just "bump" with a knee, elbow, etc so if your hands are messy you don't need to touch the surface.

I thought mine was Hafele but it's probably the Blum servodrive shown in the video referenced in that link. I think the cost installed with Dutchwood was $250. Ikea used to have a Utrusta (also referenced on that website) for much cheaper but I've heard that the installation is a little tricky. I don't know if it is still available or not. You will need to have an outlet in your sink which you may have anyhow for the GD.

Good question! I have been thinking about the same thing. I was thinking maybe I would do the pulls vertical and then install a white edge pull on the pull out cabinet. I thought it might blend in since I'm doing white cabinets.

Maybe I'll go with vertical and if that's not working for me, add the edge pull. . . .
