Hardware question - what to use on trash pull out - knob or pull?

We're 99% sure we will be using cup pulls for drawers and knobs for doors. I'm a little confused about whether to put a pull or a knob on our trash door. It looks like a DOOR, which would normally mean a knob, but I'm wondering if a cup pull would work better.

I'm sure I'm not the first person who has this dilemma...Any suggestions or advice from those of you who've solved this problem would be appreciated.

I used a pull.... and I borrowed another GW-er's idea to use a larger size than on my other drawers. It's 7 or 8" long, so I hang by dish towel on it (right across from the sink). That way dirty/wet hands grab the towel and don't get the pull and cabinet dirty :)

It works reeeeaaaaallly well, though I did have to find a knob/pull line that had lots of different sizes. I used Restoration Hardware.

FWIW I have knobs on my cabinet doors, and pulls on my drawers. Since the trash is like a big drawer, this made sense to me. And- looks great!

I used a pull. I figured it may look like a door, but since it pulls out like a drawer it made sense to put a pull. It kind of indicates how you're supposed to be opening the cabinet, in my head anyways :)

I used a pull as well. A knob seemed too itty bitty and not substantial enough for the use it would get. But I'm talking about cargo bins, so maybe that's not what you mean?

The link below is for a KV full-extension, soft-close, 100-lb rating set for $17.03. They also have full-extension slides without soft-close for as little as just under $6/pair. The better ones are $11.64/set. I just noticed that on the link, it says these are 90 lb, but in the catalog I have it says 100 lb. Maybe worth a phone call to see which is correct. Whatever you think looks best is what you should use. There is no hard and fast rule. You might try googling pull out trash (images) or cruising the FKB to see what looks good to you. I used knobs on my cabs and pulls on my drawers and a pull on my pull out trash because for me, no matter what it looks like, it's still a drawer. But like I said, it's a matter of personal preference so peruse some pix and do which ever you like.

Mileady - I have the same situation you do with trim on the door, knobs, and bin pulls. One idea I don't mind is to put the knob in the middle. The other I'm tossing around is to buy two handles that go with my other hardware - one for a horizontal cabinet with a hydraulic hinge that needs to pull "up" and one for the trash pull out. I also have a cookbook shelf turned to the side on the end of a run of cabinets, which means there is a false door on the front. Of course that door needs a pull of some sort, but I keep imagining someone coming over and yanking on it thinking it's functional.

My cabinet guy had never installed one, so I was there the day he and his helper were putting this together. For mine, there is a spring in the back that moves when the foot pedal is pressed. Depending on where they screwed in the end of the spring and how taut it was dramatically changed the force of the cabinet opening. We fiddled with about 4 placements before they got it where I wanted. My cabinet has two trash cans and at first it opened with enough force to show the back trash which is for recycling. They changed the placement of the spring so it just opens enough for the first trash can to appear. We really love this feature of the new kitchen and has been working great for 2 years now.

How about hands free...

Our German cousin had something like this. It's hands free She had no cabinet handles/pulls/knobs in the kitchen, but that's another story.

The drawer opens when you step on it....

I have knobs on cabinets and pulls on drawers and did a pull on the trash pullout. The KD said the majority of people do. It's also a visual hint and reminder to others using the kitchen that it's meant to be pulled straight out.

I had my cabinet maker make the trash pullout to look like two drawers instead of one big door, then I used a pull for each 'drawer'.

Like Stacey, I also have an 8" bar pull on the trash/compost pull out and keep a towel on it. I have a combination of chrome knobs, glass knobs, latches, cup pulls and bar pulls in our kitchen. I have both chrome and ORB and I love having the variety.
