That sounds about right for a frameless glass shower door. On the mainland, I paid about that for a similar sized one that is low-iron content (to reduce the green tint) and with Showerguard (a baked in finish).

Thanks, Jewel. I see doors online from some place called the RTA Cabinet Store for $500 plus shipping. Yes, someone would have to take delivery and install it. Maybe nobody would do the installation, unwilling to undercut the on-island glass people. (Did you notice any benefit from the Showerguard finish?)

Maybe not a good thought, but...

If you were to go to a commercial establishment that has a walk-in freezer (a serve-a-lot of meals), the walk-in often has a plastic hangy down thing. Generally the heavy duty plastic strips overlap on both sides. It is designed to help keep the temperature inside the freezer. If you were to go to a restaurant supply house, you might be able to purchase one.
One would need to install it so that the bottom would stay on the inside of the shower stall. It might be taller than you want, but you should be able to use some heavy duty shears to cut it to the correct height.
Then, all you need is a handy-person come in an install the device. Total installation time for something like that should be less than one hour. Most of those things are opaque, so privacy would be maintained. Light weight and easy to clean.

Since there are Home Depots in Hawaii not sure about your area but that is a good place to look for both types and they do offer install and I bet it might be cheaper. We looked at some of the frameless type there and at Lowes.

chisue...:0) You know I do my own work. I like HIGH END....so I'm totally on board with frameless and I know YOU want the latest style to get the highest possible rent and keep it rented.

Go frameless! "IF" I was doing it here in one of my rentals, I know my local Restore had brand new frameless shower doors donated, new in the box with the plastic still on them, they want $75, then my labor is free. But for you....just close your eyes and pay someone! :0) "Just do it!" Get the high end look!

EDITED TO SAY....the showerguard finish keeps hard water from staining the glass. It works.

For a bathroom remodel 4 years ago, we got a frameless glass shower enclosure. We're in a high cost of living area too (though less than Maui) and got it from a custom shop,

A total of 60 linear inches, split into two roughly equal sized panels, one fixed, one on hinges as the door. It's 78 inches high if that's a standard size, otherwise, it could be a bit higher. We got the next size larger than the standard thickness. Total was $1200 including delivery and labor. It was a newly built shower so they needed to supply and attach all the heavy hardware to the framing behind and below the newly installed tile.

I never advise people to use contractors through the Costco/Home Depots/ Lowe's of the world. Competent contractors who do good work don't need the referrals and I've heard too many horror stories. There is a lot of construction there, there should be some choice. But on the other hand, it's a small community overall and maybe the better guys only do big projects.

Nicole -- Does this mean you won't go install this for me? This isn't Wailea Beach Villas, so not all that 'high end'. Our other bath is a tub/shower with a curtain -- mostly because I like a bath. We don't have hard water out there, so I doubt I need that treatment on the glass.

Is 72" tall enough for the door? There's a four inch high threshold, so the top will be 76" above the shower floor. Our glass door at home is 72" on a four inch high threshold but it's a much bigger shower -- shower head is farther from the door. How high is a shower head normally set? (Ours are on adjustable rods.)

They say it will take six weeks. They will measure, have the door made to size (supposedly on the mainland), pay freight and insurance. Then they will spend an hour or two to deliver it and hang it. They aren't fabricating it, and they aren't paying retail for it. I could offer something less...but how much less? Double the retail for the door seems high.

On my last house, I had to decide if I wanted a frameless tub enclosure door or a shower curtain. I weighed the options.....we have hard water...and got the shower curtain. I can throw it away inbetween renters.

A door would have protected the tile floors better than a shower curtain. And...there's a HUGE window above the tub, a door would have limited the light coming in the dappled glass. Curtains pull to the side...

I also put a single canned light in ALL my showers . How much space between the top of the shower door and the showers framed in opening? We install shower heads @ 74" -84"....I usually look at windows and tile borders to decide on the height.

Here.....labor can be 75% of a quote.....easily! Depends.....say on a tile job for instance. I got porcelain tile @ Lowes for .10cents a sq foot.....the labor to install it would be the same even if it was $20 a sq foot for the tile......unless I wanted every tile cut into 16 pieces and a picture of the Mona Lisa on the shower wall....then the labor might be 99% of my cost...:0) (DH jokes I cut my tile into too many pieces to get different looks....)

We bought our frameless glass shower sides and door for a corner shower at Home Depot. It was a kit and DH installed it. From what I remember it wasn't that hard to do. That was about 7 years ago and it still looks good. You should check them out for price comparisons.

since we have a walk in shower got the standard opaque glass with the oldie but functional towel bar... frankly just too lazy to squeegee it down after every shower...so the pebble finish hides what the spray cleaner doesn't get to...

m fave thing though is the chair originally bought for my mother...I've been known to sit and be pelted with massage water pattern for a good 15 minutes...lol...takes your cares away!

When we redid our bathroom, we compromised with a lower end framed set of doors. We were over budget and I figured they could easily be replaced at another time. While I would prefer the look of all glass, the doors we bought (from Lowes) have worked just fine.

Nicole -- These are 8-foot ceilings. A 72" glass on a 4" threshold would leave 20" between top of the door and the ceiling. I don't think the prior (framed) glass door went this high.

I know an owner of a unit like ours who has complained that his glass shower door is too tall to wipe down easily, and he's not short.

It's a small bathroom. I used to leave the door to the hall open to avoid condensation on the mirrored walls around the vanity. (New fan now.)

Not sure if this will help but we had our bathroom remodeled 5 years ago. We used a designer and she ordered the frameless door from a local glass company. We paid almost $1800 for a 58X79 door with chrome handle and hinges. No mention of Showerguard on the receipt so I'm not sure if we have iit or not. We live in the DC metro area so high prices like Hawaii.

I don't remember how hard or soft the water is on Maui. Have you had a clear glass door on it before?

If water deposits are an issue, I think if this were my place, I'd opt for an obscured glass door. A parade of tenants can't be expected to take good care of it and once water spots start, it'll look like heck. We have several clear glass doors, moderately hard water, and it takes an effort to keep them looking good. I personally don't regret the choice, because the attractive tile in our showers provide a design feature for the bathrooms, but for a small shower in a rental unit, I'd vote for a practical choice.

Several years ago we replaced the clear glass in our old (framed) shower door with 'rainglass'. It darkened the shower more than I'd expected. Now I think I need to go with clear glass. The object is to 'open up' this 5' X 8' bathroom; the eye needs to travel through to the shower wall. I'll see what more I can discover about this 'baked in' treatment to prevent water stains.

I have posted a sign on the washer, cautioning guests to Use Less Soap. Our water is pretty soft.

We're at the condo almost three months a year. We only rent for stays of 7+ nights and seldom have a guest stay more than three weeks; longer, I have our cleaner go in in the middle of the booking. We have a great couple doing our cleaning now -- what a relief.
