Who else is trying to decide between Culinarian and Blue Star?
Comments (95)I understand that the oven door on older versions of the BlueStar RNB could get quite warm (I've heard this described as "very warm" and "surprisingly warm" by two personally-known owners and in various ways by folks posting on the internet). My range is from this spring, 2011 -- I wouldn't say notably warm for either the door or the knobs. I can place my hand flat on the oven door, while the oven's in action, without any discomfort -- half a second, ten seconds, it just doesn't matter. It's not hot. Three kids and two small dogs and it's a non-issue. The culinarian is probably a very fine product -- certainly the specs look good and far be it from me to dispute anybody's happiness with his or her purchase. Folks should keep in mind that problems and praise for that range or any other on this board -- for all of this board's virtues -- represent a very small number of reports that may be more or less representative (or wildly unrepresentative) of the larger universe of consumer experience. With the culinarian, especially, we're talking about a very small number of reports on a fairly new product. Reported problems have not been many, but they have not been zero. Reports on Trevor's interventions have been very, very favorable, but not everybody has been instantly pleased by the company itself. I really don't mean to suggest that there are any major problems with the product or the company -- not at all. And for any particular person, for all I know, this may be an excellent choice -- maybe the best one possible. But surely folks know that the record is limited?...See MoreHenrybuilt cabinet damaged by BlueStar range
Comments (43)I just wanted to add my similar experience with my Bluestar. After about 5 months of ownership and several uses of the oven, I noticed the discolored door yesterday when my wife was baking cookies. I opened my pullout next to the stove to find the side of the door scorched. This appears to be slightly different from OP's issue. The scorching is next to the louvered toe kick. There's no door seal to blame here. There's a 3/8" air gap between the edge and the toe kick. One of the concerns I saw about the Bluestar when researching was that the door, knobs, and handle get very hot. I do not find that to be the case for me. I find these to be acceptably warm. It was the toe kick that I noticed was insanely hot. I was concerned that maybe an internal heat shield or insulation was missing. After posting to the kitchen forum, I was lead to this thread. I guess it sounds like this is a standard "feature" for the Bluestar. Yes, the stove is not a rocketship. That simplicity was a benefit for us. With that simplicity also comes a lack of engineering. That's not a total knock against Bluestar. It just seems like Bluestar employs more craftsmen/artists who put out a really nice looking product with some killer features than engineers/scientists who run tests and further improve the design. Pulling out the heavy stove to protrude from all cabinetry is a fix, but it's just a bandage. We followed all of the installation instructions to the tee. The stove exterior surfaces should not get that hot. We love the open burners and will have to learn to deal with the quirks of the range at this point....See More30" BlueStar Platinum vs. Miele Combiset
Comments (12)Firstly... Most people that make comments either don't have a platinum range or post after using it just a couple of time and don't really know how to use the interchangeable Grill / Griddle. When people get new cooking appliances they nearly always have to adapt the the new appliance. Some do while other try it three times doing the same thing fail and write a bad comment or simply stop using it. Example.......... If we get a new oven in the cooking school we get 10 cook sheets of cookies and cook them on different setting using different times or temps to see which works best. Just because you your old oven cooked stunning cookies in 13 mins using convection does not mean your new one will do the same, in Capitals case maybe you need to use less temp on the "delicate bake" setting to get stunning cookies. I once had a lady fly into Boston to cook on the Capital she brought her own cookie dough and burnt 3 sets of cookies, then told me the oven in the range does not cook at all well. I asked her what she did and she told me she tried it 3 times doing the same temp and time as her old range at home. I explained to her ( in a polite way) " thats a clear definition of insanity "as per the old saying. She agreed and we set to to make more cookie dough, within 1 hour later we had really good cookies. As you can see from the link below i have used the grill with good results, in fact I might even say excellent results. The griddle also works very well once you understand what your doing.Eurostoves Platinum link As for the comment "From what I've heard on the grill it's no better than a regular grill pan" Whomever made that comment to you is a fool ...... thats all I got to say about that..... lol To end the Bluestar will out wok cook and out the grill the Miele with ease....See MoreBlueStar RNB 48 & 60" range experiences
Comments (18)I see this thread was recently raised from the dead and figured I'll share my $0.02. We remodeled a smallish galley-style kitchen in 2019 including install of a 48" RNB w 12" griddle and matching BS hood. Range was about $10k, hood and makeup air probably another $10k installed. I worked in college as a cook, so I knew I would love the griddle w/thermostat control, and I was right. I heavily debated either 24" griddle or chargrill, but decided to get the 6 burners. I'm happy with my decision but honestly I think I'd be just as happy with one of the other configurations. One thing I definitely don't regret is going RNB instead of Platinum. The 22k burners are plenty hot even for stir fry and deep frying, and the griddle is so good I can't imagine not having it. One other thing... as winter is approaching this year I started thinking about grilling indoors. I was wondering if there is an aftermarket grill grid that would fit above the BS burners similar to the Platinum grill/griddle. After a lot of searching I found Grill Grates, which has a commercial offering that is almost a perfect fit. After a few tests, I can say it works very well; better sear than my outdoor grill, in fact. I can add more details or photos of my setup if you're interested....See More- 8 years ago
