Huh? You can mention brand names on our site....it's what we do! LOL So.....what softener do you like and use, that results in no greasy odors? :)

Snuggle is what I was using that caused the problem. Am now using downy free and clear and sweet dreams. Just hate to bash anything. The whole thing is a little weird but is seems it's true-at least in our situation. Wonder if anybody else has experienced anything like this?

WOW.....water chemistry and our noses are so DIFFERENT. I was a dyed in the wool Downy user (like over 20 years!!). Recently, I had noticed that my clothes, sheets and towels didn't smell fresh. There was a mustiness, especially in my workout clothing. I stopped using Downy, and switched to the new Snuggle Fresh Spring Flowers....and it is like night & day. My clothes, sheets towels and especially my workout clothes smell great.....even a week after laundering! I do add about a 1/2 cap of Bounce in wash scent boost pellets or if I know something is really dirty or heavily used, I will pop a Tide Boost with Febreeze Victory Scent in the wash tub along with a Tide pod and some Snuggle. Amazing....fresh, clean, not overpowering and so yummy smelling :)

Had the same thing happen with Vernel Wild Rose. Sheets smelt great fresh out of the washer... but after a week of storage, the scent was really weird. Never happened with any other softener.

Oh....I do NOT like Snuggle Blue Sparkle scent softener :-o

I like their Fresh Spring Flowers scent. It is amazing, and even after weeks....sheets and towels still smell clean and fresh in the linen closet!

Have used Method Water Lily and Aloe. Mild scent, light smells really nice when clothes are dried in the dryer. Hang dry shirts or whatever inside on a hanger or worse yet hang them outside and they all smell like a wet dog. Just use Downy Free now.

Mamapinky, yes sweet dreams is the name. I found it at Target. I also had the greasy odor although a bit milder when I hung a load on the line to dry. Opened my closet and it reeked, had to rewash the whole load.

Larsi, I like the Fresh Spring Flowers and White lavender and Sandalwood. Blue sparkle, had to pour the bottle down the drain

Anyway, it is comforting to know I'm not the only one with this problem. Misery loves company.:)

Mold grows in old bottles of fabric softener, if it's older than six months then throw it away. The same with liquid detergent, only buy what you can use in six months.

Downy Unstopables Scent Boosters smell good, you might add some of those to a wash.

Do Household Products Expire?

Cleangeek, thanks for the link. It is interesting and good info. But that was not my problem. The fabric softener was new and I buy smaller sizes so they wont go bad before I can finish them.

Cleangeek..I didn't see anything about mold growing in fabric softener only that effectivness will diminish, unless I missed it. I thought that is why they put preservitives in it?

Not all liquids have preservatives, also the chemicals break down over time. Manufacturers change formulas every once in awhile so maybe that's why it smells different, it's also possible that the bottle was sitting on the shelf(or stockroom) for six months before you bought it.

Have you ever thought about going without fabric softener? I quit using it years ago and haven't missed it. (That said, I don't have a lot of synthetic clothing, and what I have, I usually hang to dry. Otherwise I do get a bit of static cling.) Saves money and time!
