Need help determining cause of strange odor
Comments (4)It might be bad paint. Ask the landlords which rooms they repainted before you moved in. This happened to a friend of mine. The paint used in one room had gone bad, and it smelled like something was dead. After a LOT of effort, including refinishing the floor in that room, crawling around in the attic looking for a dead rodent, etc etc, another friend figured out that it was the paint. She repainted the entire room with a Zinsser product, probably the one that is a primer/sealer, then added a regular top coat. Comments (13)I was having the same smell in this rental I moved into last March. Just so happens, in one of the Spring issues of a magazine-a professional plumber had an answer to this problem. He said often the sewer gas will not escape & I did what he suggested-and I still do it 2x a month. NO more odor! In every drain in your home..kitchen, bath, laundry...run hot water in the sinks & tubs for 1 minute. Flush all toilets. (Are you ready for this?) Measure 2 TBS of vegetable oil & dump it down all of the drains & let it set for 5 minutes or so before running water anywhere. I swear-the smell goes away within the hour. It creates (-for lack of a better word) a..skim covering over the drain holes & prevents the gases from coming up from the drain. Cheap way to solve the issue without a plumber. try it-can't hurt....See MoreStrange odor above fridge
Comments (11)Thanks, everyone. Luckily there's no mousy smell anywhere, so I don't think there's a live mouse problem. The buildings are poured concrete and they had everything out to tile the floor so they'd have seen any holes, I think. Lazy, you may be right, but given that no one has been in there for more than a week or two at a time for several years, it's kind of hard to think how it could have happened. If we'd had a long power outage, like after the hurricanes in 2004/2005 (two weeks each time!), yeah, but they'd shut everything down for the summer long before those blew in. Linelle, I doubt he would right now, considering how much he's had to pay for repairs, tiling and carpeting. It's something to keep in mind and maybe the thing will fail eventually so he has no choice, but right now he's also paying for running a new water line with trenching and all, so this isn't the time to ask. It's not a horribly noticeable smell unless you're right on top of the fridge, although with the air freshener remnants it's hard to say that for sure. There are rats outside here from time to time (we're right next to a nature preserve and their last seasonal renter clubbed to death the friendly blacksnake that took care of this building because she was afraid it would hurt her dog), and the fridge is right next to the door to the patio, so it's not out of the question that one snuck in and managed to die there. In any case, I'll give her a coil brush as a house-warming gift....See MoreMy window shutters smell like bad body odor
Comments (13)Thank you Amy, you are such a great help. Most probably they are the ones you sent me. Well, I beleive they were there before but there were no smell.it only happened when I decided to clean them with the multipurpose lavender wipes.. since then, Everytime the sun hits them or I open the window a very bad smell goes around the room. Cleaned them again yesterday with a mix of water and white vinegar but that didn't help either. I cleaned the second room yesterday with a damp cloth and not any kind of wipes it detergents and am not facing the issue...See More- 14 years ago
