Still going crazy with brick...
Comments (8)dreamer16, We also found that brick on a website looked quite different than brick in real life. Also, I found that the website might show 4-5 houses all using the same brick and each one looked like the brick was slightly different. It is amazing the impact of the other house finishes, house orientation and the time of day the house was photographed. One other key difference we found was brick colour from one size to another. For example in one brick we looked at in a large format was rather orange/red but in their queen size it was a much richer red. It turns out the brick being sold under the same name came from two different plants and the clay was different colour. Mortar colour can also impact the colour of brick and the overall appearance. So, double check the colour of the mortar for the house you have seen in real life. Finally, brick colour lots colours change over time. So be sure to check out the actual brick at the brick yard (not some sample that they have had in a showroom for years). Likewise the beautiful house may have been bricked 3 years ago and the current brick being sold by that name is slightly different colour. I think the brick you are leaning towards is gorgeous. I believe you have a winner! But do your homework to ensure what you see on the house you like, is what you will get! Carol...See MoreGoing crazy trying to find a match in engineered wood!
Comments (12)1) you CAN put hardwood over slab! there is a plasic layer that goes down then they cover it with a plywood type layer then the hard wood. But it will be about 1 1/2" thickness at least. 2) try lauzon engineered the different woods have different selections as far as variation available for example; oak select and better has a natural variation in color so it's smoother to the eye I think, but exclusive has more color difference and some visual knots etc which my husband prefers because he's color blind so he can see more of the color difference as it has mor light to dark and he likes the knots, so even the same red oak can be quite different depending on the grade we choose, plus most engineered now somes with a micro edge, you can get 3 1/4 lauzon with a square edge (looks like what you have), anyway, check them out and see what they have, somewhere on their site they have a decoration area you can decorate the room with a floor and see a multitude of different grades in a large floor in an actual room for an example...See MoreI am crazy, I am going to demo in a blizzard
Comments (23)Hey Amberley, Scrappy, & Bmorepanic (& anyone else in this MD/VA/DC)...we have around 30" here in Western Howard County. Drifts are quite a bit higher...the one we measured was 36" high! My DH just started slowly snow blowing our driveway. We have a fairly long drive, so it's going to take awhile...he figures it will take him at least 2 days to do it all! Our dogs refuse to budge from the porch...we have to push them off to "do their duty" on the snow rather than the porch! My DD tried throwing Ruby (the female) into one of the drifts...but she stayed on top and daintily walked down & off the drift! Heavy snow! But, we have a fire going and I just made hot chocolate for the kids (they just came in from playing out there-13 & 15 years old and still playing in the snow, I love it!), so we're doing great! I also made a big pot of chili for tomorrow and now I'm making pineapple casserole (me) + Roman Holiday (DH & kids) for tonight's dinner! Amberley, it sounds like you're making good progress b/w the demoing and the snow shoveling!...See MoreWould I be crazy to paint my brand new cabinets?
Comments (22)I hope you painted them! Everyone is suggesting a pro, at the low, low price of $7k. And if I hired a pro interior designer, I'd expect them to suggest a pro - which I'm sure would do a great job. But, if you want your cabinets white, paint them! If you're anything like me, you'll never be satisfied until they're white :) I've painted our kitchen cabinets at both our houses and they turned out great. If you sand, do the prep work, and buy quality paint they will be fine. We just redid our kitchen and the brand new cabinets looked blue instead of charcoal, so I tried to get used to them for a year and hated them everyday, until I repainted them black. Never regretted it once. That's the best part of owning your house, you can make it however you want it with the budget you're working with....See MoreJennifer
