Let's talk English style cool toned Pinks! +help me choose some!
I'm personally searching for some English style roses that would do well in my climate and would fit the pink palette for the front yard. So looking to choose a range from light to dark and even into burgundy. Mostly looking at David Austin because I don't know quite where else to look! MUST HAVE decent repeat and an attractive overall bush shape and good disease resistance! Sep in love with the cup shaped and petal heavy blooms :)
But let's talk Pinks! Those that lean toward purple rather than toward peach. Please comment on your experience: repeat, bush shape/size, bloom size, disease resistance, whether the color in real life fits the promo pics and maybe if you recommend it for my climate? Would love to see your pictures as well!

Comments (29)Hi Cath, it's entirely possible, though I've not read of it. I do know Judge Henry Fonda, who lived in Mar Vista by Santa Monica and operated a small nursery at his home for several years, unsuccessfully tried Cl. Mlle. Cecile Brunner for standards. Nothing took for him and he theorized it was due to "genetic incompatability". I know Ralph Moore brought in the rose known as Moore's South African OGR with the intention of trying it as a stock, but it didn't work, either. He stated the wood was too hard and the bark refused to "slip", lift easily enough for buds to be inserted. I have no information whether he tried the chip budding technique Burling uses or not. With as many thousands who have played with roses over just the past century alone, I'm sure someone may have had your idea, I just don't have knowledge of or information about whether it has been tried nor whether it worked or not. I do know many things have been tried. A friend received Austins from Hortico back in the eighties and nineties whose suckers were definitely Bride's Dream, which Hortico flatly refused, but that's what grew from the suckers on those roses. I've tried quite a few things myself, including Cardinal Hume (which works splendidly), and Festival Pink, my solid pink sport of Festival Fanfare, the striped sport of Fred Loads. That one worked pretty well and developed very thick, nearly self supporting trunks, but sun burned very badly in my climate which made it less than suitable. I had previously found this in the 1920 ARS annual about someone in Florida budding Druschki on Mme. Plantier, though it's been theorized by others what was meant was probably Odorata or Fortuniana. Who can say for sure? If you have the rose in question and want to try it, the information would be quite interesting to report back to us here on the forum. Who knows? Comments (32)He didn't talk me into anything just wasted 7 months of my time and $50,000 for a plan that was 3X more than I told him on day one (very emphatically) that I was going to spend. So here I sit $50k poorer with a large set of drawings I'll never use that I put so much time into helping develop. I have no idea what to do next. That's what my architect inadverantly talked me into. He had no idea whatsoever how much anything costs as he evidentally only worked with millionares with unlimited budgets. Heck the biggest red flag was in December when he and the only contractor willing to even discuss the project at that point with me were wasting my entire work day when they were supposed to be talking about reducing the cost on my project but, instead they spent an hour or 2 talking about their experiences with rich clients and how very funny it was to have clients with unlimited budgets that would build something, not like it, and tell them to just tear it down and do it again another way. Knock me in the head with a hammer(pardon the pun)! IMO it seems architects in my small city (Baton Rouge) like clients with unlimited money who don't care how many anything costs. I am a hard working person who has worked their behind off for all that I have. I was so intimidated being a female going to get a huge loan and hiring an architect (seemed pretentious). But, I felt with an investment this large, I thought it was the right thing to do. I felt sheepish doing it. It took 5 month in the process to finally go to bid and 2 out of 3 contractors refused to waste their time doing a formal bid and personally told me so. They said the architect was crazy and it was a totally unrealistic project and that I would be wasting my money and that the drawings were horrible. On December 24th (yes Xmas Eve) the architect told me he would do everything in his power to make it right. The story ends today March 2 with me having NOTHING still and waiting. So, I would also advise never, ever use relatives or feel obligated to use someone related by marriage. No matter how good people say they are. Trust your instincts and stick to your budget. Or you will be sitting here waiting 7 months later with no plan, much poorer and frustrated. I know I sound mad. I am. He is now fired. I don't have any recourse that I know of. I finally got my loan approved (post mortgage crisis) after much frustration architect frustration. Now I have to start over. PS I signed the first architect agreement or SOW on 7/28/08. Comments (37)OK, here are the pics after the cabs were stained. We went with a deep mahogany to coordinate with the tiles, granite and backsplash. The results have really exceeded our expectations. My contractor says that the shine of the top coat will tone down over the next few weeks. Note: I have many skills, but photography is not one of them. Comments (64)Mich, I've seen that in the stores and wondered about it. Some detergents don't have enzymes, I stear clear most of the time, however not every load is tragic, so not every load needs enzymes. If there's not a bunch of stains and the clothes just have the normal dust and body oils, that bottle of All probably does a nice job on darks and colors. I'm a powder fan but lately I've been enjoying some liquids, lol. Actually I have found liquids without enzymes make my sheets feel very smooth, I've been using a new boutique one I've run across, I'm not sure yet though if its the lack of enzymes or because its a liquid, but they do feel better I'll send a pic of it in a sec....See More

8 years agoI agree with Princess A of K. She is fantastic! She does very well in our heat. Blooms are HUGE and with great repeat and fragrance to boot.

Munstead is also another favorite of mine. Holds up well in our heat and is just beautiful! Good rebloom. Great color.

8 years agoHuntington Rose is a great one from Austin that doesn't seem to get as much attention as his others, but its a nice cool pink. A prolific bloomer and does well in my zone 10 garden.

8 years agoThis is the second year for my Falstaff, and so far I'm loving it. It's not pink, but deep magenta, fading to purple (and a nice purple, not a sickly one). The flowers are durable in rain, the flowers nod, which I like (and which might help them from collecting water). So far, not much frying in the sun (although smaller flowers with the 90F heat). Biggest disappointment: almost no fragrance, but when detectable, it is old rose. First flush flowers were about 3". Flowers don't flatten out but keep this cupped form. It's starting to put out a second flush now when WS2K is busily frying its first flush in the sun and mildewing. Most remontant roses (i.e. hybrid teas) here put out a nice first flush, then a few miserable looking flowers in the heat if any, then another nice flush in the fall. Falstaff mildewed a bit this year. We don't get blackspot here. Photo bloom color is accurate.
In my tough climate, it takes a while for plants to grow. Planted in the spring of last year, it did nothing the rest of the year. This year the bush is very vigorous (like climber vigorous), upright, but
not stiff, and the new basals are almost as tall as the bush now. The leaves are matte and nicely formed, very old rose. Here's the first flush. I hope it gets all big and gangly.
