Jade pruning update.
Comments (2)The pot is 4 inches across. I was holding the pot in the palm of my hand when I took the pictures, it's not very big. Just about all of the research I did here and else where said to remove all of the foilage. It would look unbalanced with one or two large leaves, and a bunch of new ones. I removed them all, and the plant sprouted new ones in about 2-3 weeks. I saw on your post that it was sprouting. You should be fine. I started my project early in the summer. Your plant may not grow as fast in the winter. My jade sat outside in an enclosed porch with bright light throughout the day, and it was very warm. I have an aunt in Aurora, so I know your winters can be cold! Goodluck! I hope your plant turns out to be OK!...See MoreUpdate on Mike's jade
Comments (21)Thanks everyone, I'm so flattered! Sadly, this plant has grown pretty much on it's own and has thrived despite the neglect. I threw it in the pot with whatever soil I had on hand and it gets watered accidentally when the plant next to it gets watered. I've never even fed it. lol So, the trick is to live in beautiful Southern California, the land of the happy plants. All my plants are grown outside. I'm not sure where the red comes from but I've noticed that on my other jades too. I don't know if you can tell, but the red on these are very deep and bright. Maybe it's the sun?...See MoreJade grafting update
Comments (10)Well as I suspected a 90 degree graft was a bad idea... The wax cracked when I moved it days after the first post I made and I noticed that the edges had already contracted... I noticed a few days ago that it appeared that *if* the graft had taken it was only thru an area just smaller than a pencil... Then yesterday morning I came out to the studio to find the graft had fallen off completely. Decided to try *once* more this time with an offset V cut, and using a small miter gauge to assure the cuts were 100% straight. I used medical wrap, latex free, that sticks to itself and wrapped that sucker as tight as I could get it. When done I couldn't wiggle the grafted branch at all. I ended up adding a single strand of black tape at the center most point of the graft as it appeared that overnight the cooling of the house had let the medical wrap loosen a little. Hopefully this time it takes, if it does I think next summer I'll dock the dangling branch on the left and the new plant at the base and graft those to the central stalk of this plant see if I can't rebuild some of the lost foliage....See MoreUpdate time already! Comments (22)Hey everyone! Hi Nancy. I have a feeling that it could be spider mite damage. That is what I had a problem years back and that is what the leaves on mine use to look like. It has to be a pest of some sort on yours too Josh damaging the surface tissue. Maybe a slug which I have caught on mine or even earwigs. They were sitting in a few of mine the other day and left an indented mark. Nancy. I just love yours. Great job and it is so good to see you. Linda, Josh and Mary, have a great night! Still looking forward to a few more pictures from the dozens of people that got some. Well, we will see.:-) Mike...See Moremarguerite_gw Zone 9a
