Update time already! Mother Jade&How are the babies?

Hello folks!

Yes, if you can believe it, it has been almost two years since my mass mailing out of cuttings and plants related to this plant.

It is doing very well and I was wondering how all the cuttings and rooted ones were doing? Here are some pics I took this am.

All I asked for when I sent them was for updates, and that is all I really care to know. Although, I certainly do hope all the hands behind these plants are doing well too:-)

Wow, your Mother Jade has bounced back beautifully! It's huge compared to my small cutting ;-)
You know I've treasured this little guy, and I'll be moving it into a larger container to put on some size.

Thank you again for sharing this plant and so many others!

The question is, I'm not really sure what to do with them. Will they cause irreparable damage to my hard earned crops? Probably. Should I just ignore them? No. Will they find another food source? If you introduce a food source that they like more than your garden, they'll eat that instead. That's known as a "distraction crop". I figured if the rabbits really wanted to eat my crops, they would have done so already, but the crops haven't grown much yet. Too soon to say. Watch what they eat, because they're going to be eating *something*, and a lot of it. If they have something that you don't mind them eating that they prefer, let them have it. Unfortunately for me, mine prefer strawberry leaves, brassicas, and carrot tops! I don't really wanna kill them, and I don't want to mess with them Then fence in the areas you don't want them getting to. This means extending the fence at least 6 inches underground and three feet up, made of 1" chicken wire (or smaller), or other materials with similar properties. Yes, it really needs to be 1" or less; I even once saw a scared baby bunny fit through 1", although it was an unusually tiny one and it was really hard for it to make it through. You need this fencing on every side. Some species of rabbits will be more capable of digging or jumping than others, so you may need deeper or taller, depending on what kind yours are. A good way to test your fence is to try to chase a rabbit into your garden. If they make it in, the fence is no good. ;) I'm afraid moving them will make their mother abandon them and they'll starve to death. At least with most animals, that's a myth. I don't know about the specific case of rabbits. As for the importance of fencing: For two years, I got almost no strawberries from my patch, as the rabbits kept eating all the leaves. So, I eventually fenced it in and got two years of flush crops. This year, I wanted to expand the patch, so I took the fence down and tilled up the adjacent area and thinned them out into the new land -- hoping that they had lost their taste for strawberry leaves, as I didn't want to have to put in such a big fence. The rabbits devastated the patch again. I just finished re-fencing the larger area back in. :P

Oh my! I understand the roller coaster you're on, garden wench. Mum had a stroke in July 04 and is back home with me, mercifully. It's difficult to watch a parent struggle with things that used to be reasonably simple. It's difficult to be "in charge" of not only care and medical decisions, but finances, as well. Clothing: pull on pants are WONDERFUL! I bought 4 pair of the pull on, stretch cordouroy ones that were in the Lands End catalogue last fall. Mum LOVES them; they wash and wear like a dream, and they fit her well. I had good luck with LL Bean in fall 04, buying slacks in a heavy-weight knit AND buying the coordinating tops, too. Mum has trouble with buttons, so I try to find things that pull over the head and have buttons as a pretty detail, or a pretty neckline/collar. I've had great luck at Eddie Bauer, too... lovely cotton sweaters and stretchy turtlenecks. I generally order 1 of something from a catalogue, once it's been tried on and receives the thumbs up I get right on line and order several. Buy things that will tolerate the industrial laundry service at a nursing home. Mum lives with me, so I am able to spend time with stain removal and the few "handle with care" items she has in her wardrobe. I was trained as a tailor, and I sew for a living. I do all the required alterations myself, saving snippits of the fabric to take with me when I stop by a store. I'm able to match things and get wonderful bargains. I insist that Mum have socks that match her slacks, lol, I insist the woman who helps her bathe use them, too! Mum was very fashionable before her health crashed and I have maintained that aspect of her life for her. She has pretty scarves, nice accessories, and they are all there for the "bath lady" and Mum to peruse and choose. I have patterned things that she likes particularly well, and have made new ones for her in new and exciting fabrics. I have found several stores where the saleshelp is patient and fun. I scout the stores for "good stuff" and then take Mum OUT, we go midweek when things are not very busy; we have a blast. I find shopping for shoes to be particularly trying. She is incredibly fussy, and she has to have "good, sensible shoes". I have to take her shoe shopping again, and I dread it. I take her for a haircut every 4 weeks. She has great hair, and gets a stylish, short haircut (easy to maintain and style), and has her nails trimmed, shaped, and buffed. I refuse to allow her look "shaggy", sloppy, and "old". Even her eyeglasses are fashionable! and we have to address the need for some sunglasses, a new wallet, and a "user friendly" handbag, too. Ugh... The helpmeet is often frustrated by our lack of freedom, too. But he is wonderful with Mum. I get her up in the morning, make sure she's washed and dressed and at the breakfast table. I usually see that she has taken her morning meds. and has her bowl of fresh fruit and a cup of tea/coffee (decaf. only). He takes over and prepares her an egg, pancakes, french toast, etc.. He returns home for lunch and sees that she has lunch with him. I'm home in the afternoon and see that she has a snack, water, and goes outdoors for exercise. I do the lion's share of her care (urostomy changes, and requisite daily maintenace), involving her as much as is practicable, but he is wonderful with her! good humored and patient beyond measure. I have to do her finances tonight, as a matter of fact. It always seems worse than it turns out to be, but it does add an additional 1/2 hr. to what's already been a long day. I understand. Hang in there; you will find a way to make it all work, but it takes time, patience, and sense of humor.

Thank you, sjerin and everyone who has said such nice things. About the yogurt. It is in one of the Bayou Tales...I will eventually post it here...but one of the first possums I got had metabolic bone disorder. I called a possum expert in California and consulted with her on what to do. She told me to mix a portion of all kinds of chopped vegetables with a portion of Purina Cat Chow....had to be that brand...stir it together with enough yogurt to moisten it. I hand fed the possum for weeks and she never got any better and eventually died. I found out though that all possums love yogurt...most animals do. And I started giving them all some, since it is a good source of calcium and they have high calcium requirements. The possum...well "opossum yahoo group" wouldn't let me join, but I became good friends with one of their members. If any of you ever received one of my possum Christmas cards, she designed them. She truly loved her possums...had just one at a time, but one was quite elderly....they have short life spans...at 4 yrs. old and she even took it to an acupuncturist to relieve her arthritic pains. Anyway, she was telling me about a possum she was helping rehab and they couldn't get him to take the medicine they had for him. Their method was to take one of those little Baskin Robbins Ice Cream sample spoons and try to give him the medicine from that. I told her....that's not going to work. Under the best of circumstances, possums will gape their mouths open. It is a common behavior...even tame possums will do it....it is a response to show their teeth and growl, feign they are ferocious...if that doesn't work and they can't escape, they may play dead, or even bite you. Anyway, the way to give possums medicine, you mix it in a little yogurt. They eat every bit of it. (So see, I could have taught the experts something.) :-)) I like giving it to little possums because it is very filling and even fattening. They are much less likely to chew on each other if they are full and sleepy. I have never had a possum develop metabolic bone disorder, out of the hundreds that I have raised. Meanwhile, back at the possum yahoo group, the original possum expert...the one who taught the one that I had the phone conference with...a vet in Orange County, California, who spent 17 years studying possums, died. The possums group was beside themselves because Purina changed the regular cat chow recipe in some way, and now they were afraid to use it any more. Some of them decided not to ever feed meat based foods to their possums ever again. It made me so glad that I wasn't a member of the group. I am sure I would have made many enemies because don't tell me that an animal with 50 razor sharp, triangular teeth should not eat meat. People who can't figure out simple things like that....get on my nerves. So I am not a member of their group but I am going along without them. ;) No. I don't get any vacations. In a way I don't mind because I have traveled quite a bit...but there are a few places I'd love to go again...mostly east of the Mississippi. If my husband is home, I can go like to the iris convention for Louisiana irises in Lafayette, La. It is just three days. I haven't been in awhile but would like to go next year to see my old friends. I really don't mind staying home....I love it here. I have a million things to do...I don't ever get bored. Sometimes I get sleepy though. We do plan to do some work on the place, as soon as my husband can get back to work. If I was better set up to take care of all the animals...chickens, horses, possums, pigs...it would be a lot easier. My husband was very sick with a UTI about two weeks ago. I didn't sleep well because every time he woke up, I woke up, and he was so very sick and it was so stressful, and I felt so run down when he finally did get well. I am just now getting my strength back. I felt so wrung out. But I am much better now. I am glad you enjoy hearing about the animals. I don't think my rehab group likes us talking about them because it is their fear that someone will think they make good pets, but I always tell people, they aren't good pets, but I think by writing about them, it helps some people to understand them a little better.

I'm going to be okay, sjerin. I'm going to be a whole lot more careful though. And I am happy. I am going to take another little donkey, one that I call Bug, so Fern will have company here when I bring her home. I am going to leave Buttermilk until I find out she can be handled. If she doesn't adapt to being handled, when her baby is old enough to be weaned, I will take it, and leave Buttermilk there. I can't take her if she won't allow me to touch her. She is getting a little bit better...I can at least stand close to her.

THE RANGE OF COLORS IS AMAZING, IS IT NOT?

Look at the colors of mine in which there is a lot more beige, florescent yellows hues and a bit or red at tips and a very light colored bark
The Josh's with a rich florescent yellow with red tips and a redder bark.
Then Linda's with a LOT more yellow and deeper richer green color against deep rich yellow!

This just what we wanted to see. the range of color in different parts of the earth:-)

Thank you so much for sharing Josh and Linda. Thanks for your nice comments Sharon. This one has only been outside once for a about a mont last year. I grow this one indoors behind those huge windows. It seems very happy there. I hope it flowers this year, although I have never had a very contented one do so.

Since I sent out dozens more. I hope to see many others.

Hi Josh and Linda! both of yours are doing very well! Linda, I just love the all white branch you have! SO pretty!!

Here's mine...It's doing well so far but, I've been battling a few scales on some of my Jades lately. Any other suggestions other than spraying it with alcohol?

I am awaiting a cutting from Mike from that mother plant, I am excited about it. What a great Jade.

See, this is what makes newbies crazy. It looks to me to be three different plants! One has stripes, one red on leaves, one yellow leaves, and heaven only knows just how big this cutting will get or the "proper" soil to use is! No wonder so many people need help identifying succulents! They seem to morph before your very eyes.

Having said that, perhaps it is the hunt for correct identification that is rewarding in its own right. I certainly spend enough time on it!

Mike you earned your plant, now I want to mail it, and I do need an address. My plant did not do well at all, the one with the Burgany underside croaked and I don't know why, perhaps I was trying to get it to grow. Don't forget that ever leaf that drops to the bottom of their pot here grows, no help from me. Norma

This bright California sun really intensifies the color.
It's time for a larger container, though...this plant deserves some root-room to grow.

Nancy, your plant is doing great!
What do the scale look like on your Jade? I noticed some bumps on my Jade leaves this Spring,
and I picked them off...which disfigured the leaves. I couldn't tell if it was scale or not,
but I figured I'd remove it just in case.

Hey Josh! Sounds very similar to what I'm dealing with...I have NO idea what it is for sure but guessed it was Scale? Exactly like you mentioned...I can pick it off and it disfigured the leaves also. Its very frustrating!

To me it is very obvious they all came from the same plant, however the growing conditions are differant and that will induce differant colors..also maturity of the plant. Even though they are cuttings as they turn into individual plants they need time to mature to adulthood...so that will bring on differant colors of the stems/bark also. But mostly I would say environmental factors.

Hi...I don't believe that is scale...
scale is a pest that looks like a tiny little brown helmet sitting on a the stem or leaf and if you pick it off and smash it, it cracks open and a yellow oozes out...
and pesticides don't work on the adult because of the shell.. I had a plant with it once and I pitched the plant it was really bad....
Im sure others here will have a remedy...I will be watching and learning.....good luck linda

Josh, will look for your picture! I would like to get to the bottom of it too and see if there's any remedy or treatment for it? It doesn't seem to affect the health of the Jade...but it is very unattractive on the leaves :o(

Hey everyone! Hi Nancy.

I have a feeling that it could be spider mite damage. That is what I had a problem years back and that is what the leaves on mine use to look like.
It has to be a pest of some sort on yours too Josh damaging the surface tissue.

Maybe a slug which I have caught on mine or even earwigs. They were sitting in a few of mine the other day and left an indented mark.

Thanks Mike...I really love this Jade! Its quite unique!

Well, I've added some soil drench to the soil and sprayed the leaves with alcohol/water. The good news is it doesn't seem to be getting worse...we'll see?

I'll keep an eye on mine, too. Mike, *I* am the one who actually caused the tissue damage
to the leaves when I was trying to scrape off the bumps (which I thought were scale at first).
But there wasn't any structure to the bumps. If I have to, I'll just whack the top off and
start over.

Because they're all affected... ;-)
I might remove the top...but then I'd lose all the color.

Hi all....
Josh and Nancy...I would leave the leaves on the plants...
I had some damage on mine (from tipping over) and the leave healed and there was a scab that pealed off and you can't tell...look at my picture and look for the leaves that are not quite perfect ovals...I hope I explaned this right...so you all know what I mean....Joshs' jade kinda looks like sun damage???? maybe....and Nancys' looks a little like a bug eating on it...??
I will keep looking in my books to try and help....linda
