Layout -- Butler's Pantry space?
Comments (40)Moving the range closer to the wall ovens as rhome suggests is a very good idea, especially since your range doesn't actually line up with anything in particular. I don't need that much space next to my range to really cook, and you'll have the island across from it as well. Putting the microwave near the fridge however is crucial. Having to walk around your island every time you want to use your microwave will make you crazy. Also, I don't know where you're putting your trash storage, but next to the fridge, near the pantry and the entry to the garage is the best place for it. Most of the working portion of your kitchen in your current kitchen plan is where the range, fridge and little sink are. If you move your cook top a little closer to the main clean up sink, it will be much easier to wash pots and pans there. In my kitchen, the main ''clean up'' sink is farthest from my fridge and range, very similar to your plan. I realized I would be using my ''prep'' sink (the one closest to the range/fridge) as much as the ''main'' sink, so I made it almost as large as the clean up sink. What I've actually found is I use it as much for cleaning up pots and pans as I do for prep work. In that respect, moving the range closer to your biggest sink would be a wise choice. The counter space on the DR side of the kitchen seems excessive. How were you planning on using that space? I have an 8 foot length of counter with my island. The rest of my counters are much shorter in length; I think my longest stretch is four feet of space. That is plenty of space for individual ''stations'', even if I were teaching a cooking class. Your kitchen is Huge; I think you can have what you want from it as long as you're flexible enough to design space that will work for you....See MorePass through between kitchen and butler's pantry
Comments (9)hello8- We decided to do a vertical pocket door for the pass through (similar to the first pic that califreckles posted above). The cabinets have now been designed and an independent cabinet maker will be starting on them this week. We are still trying to determine what the material to make the door because we want it to be discrete and blend into the back splash area. We will probably have soapstone countertops and I am thinking maybe a vertical beadboard....See MoreOptions to add a butler's pantry?
Comments (5)You're welcome. Landing space for the fridge would be the island--I moved the island to make the main traffic aisle wider, but it could be a little narrower. The narrow cabinet would be a pantry or pull-out, rather than a narrow counter. I love built-ins and nooks, especially in houses of a certain vintage. The butler's pantry would fit right in, IMO. The uppers there could be 15" and bases 18", with the counter at 19"--plenty of room to stack dishes or make toast. If the fridge moves to the short wall by the nook, will the oven be in the top/sw corner? Will the DW be on the right side of the only sink? That run of base cabinets across from the island would be convenient for dish drawers, but I was liking the idea of cooktop and hood as a focal point from the hallway. willTV's built-in fridge and 14" pantry cab: grlwprl's fridge and pantry cab: a2gemini's pantry pull-out:...See MoreWorth having sink in butler’s pantry??
Comments (33)Below is an illustration of an exercise I sometimes go through on a project to point out the efficiency of the layout, how much of the house is dedicated to circulation space and how much room there is for furniture. Circulation space is unavoidable but the less there is the more efficient the layout is.This just addresses efficiency. Other design flaws I see are how insect screens are handled at the double doors in the dining and guest bedroom? Why are there doors there and not windows? Where will a guest entering from the front have their coat hung? If the door from the guest bath to the family room survives, where will the light switch go? Why such a big work triangle in the kitchen? Work triangles work best when they are a triangle. And the list is longer but I have to get back to work....See Moredriftwoodandmarble
