With hardy evergreen euphorbias, old stems are removed at the base each season after the flowering is completed. That stimulates new basal growth which provides the followiing season's flowering stems. It may be that this plant is not growing under its preferred circumstances - it likes full sun; well drained, lean soil and is very drought tolerant once established.

Do you know what type it is? If its already sun hardy u can pretty much put it back in sun ( more for neoregelia). Vrieseas and Guzmania need shade for most varieties. Use a slow release fertiliser if it has no roots yet, a manure based fert will burn new roots. However if its a Vriesea they love dynamic lifter once a root base is established. I go back & forth about this lawn weed. This time of year with the small yellow flowers & small foliage I don't mind it. Once the larger leaves come & it reseeds into my flower beds I don't like it as much. When I've converted parts of the lawn to flowerbeds buttercup is the most persistent weed around the edges pushing up through any possible gap in the cardboard smother layer. For that reason I pull it whenever possible, but don't use any chemicals to get rid of it in the lawn. What I don't like about the weeds in the lawn is the way it interferes with playing bocce ball or croquet. A smooth turf without these larger leaved weeds would improve my chances of beating my opponents. Just today sat on the lawn pulling buttercup & its new runners, plantain, & another creeping spreader with purple flowers called Prunella vulgaris. One weed led to another until I had crept along for a few hours pulling up a huge amount of weeds that had basically woven themselves through the turf. Hundreds remain, so it might be a losing battle, but I feel triumphant and just may have a chance of beating my son at a game. Anyone have this weed in their lawn? Perhaps true to character for some, poison ivy has taken over this thread. My search for "understory shrubs to shade out weeds" led me here. I am in North Florida, and I like to have safe access to my mature loblolly grove to clear out by hand or weed wrench the returning coral ardesia, nandina, air potato, and broad leaf privet. (In my experience "done once and for all" and "gardening" are mutually exclusive.) But the poison ivy also overgrown there is an obstacle course. Would introducing lots of some native shade loving plants out compete the above listed exotic invasives, so I could let the poison ivy alone? Or would the PI eventually fill up the chain link fence and smother the old camelias there? We are talking fairly deep shade on the ground but dappled sun on the camelia branches. What natives if any?
