Profusion Flowering Crabapple - Help!
Comments (9)Not the most disease-resistant crabapple, you might want to try another instead. Except for narrower forms, such as fastigiate cultivars and a small number of naturally erect-growing species many kinds of trees often produce spreading specimens as wider or wider than tall when grown in the open, without crowding by other trees close by. Most kinds of crabapples, including 'Profusion' produce a spreading, even arching crown in time....See MoreSpring flowers before the snow
Comments (5)Yes, what a beautiful show!! I planted my first spring blooming bulbs the fall before last, so thus far, I haven't had a huge show. (I've also realised I should have planted more of the same bulb to begin with!) I don't have any daffodils, but my tulipa tarda are about to bloom, as well as a bunch of darwin hybrid tulips and a few scilla(for some reason my muscari and scilla haven't really got on their feet) We got a couple inches of snow as well, but it melted yesterday and miraculously everything seems to be fine! So I'm glad I got lucky this year, because last year everything in the spring was pretty pitiful because of the cool temperatures. I'm still hopeful this spring will be better than last. Looks like warmer temps are ahead!...See MoreLooking for crabapple (Malus) Red Jewel mailorder or ?
Comments (5)Greetings all! The reason for being very specific for the Red Jewel (Jewelcole) cultivar has to do with the retention of the tiny brilliant red apples all the way to spring. I have a wall about 12' wide, white that has a perfect spot to show off the brilliant and profuse winter "berry" effect of that cultivar. There are no other cultivars I've found that have the combination of several factors that this Malus one does. Specifically the factors are: Profuse display of white flowers in spring Disease resistance is very good size maxes out at about 12' wide by about 15' tall bright green summer foliage profuse 1/2" fruit set that is brilliant cherry red the fruit are retained on the tree all winter until the March flowering season it is very cold tolerant I've done my homework. The problem is trying to locate a supplier. Google has not helped me very much but I'm working on it. Any suggestions for nurseries that would have it would be appreciated. Al's Garden Center in Woodburn, OR lists it but they said they have not carried it for a few years and won't order any. Comments (7)The common scenario is [crab]apple mowing, wherein the tree is overpruned and responds by throwing up a forest of verticals, which are then cut out year after year in an attempt to force the tree into a stereotypic caricature instead of a naturalistic, attractive specimen. However, crabapples may also throw up vertical shoots as a natural part of their development. Those in suitable positions can be left in place to gradually bend over and become twiggy and floriferous, others can be pruned out--although expect many of these to put up a fight (re-sprout)....See Morewirespider01
