Netflix Recommendations

This past week-end I watched all 13 episodes of a Netflix Original called Bloodlines. It stars Sissy Spacek, Sam Shephard, Dean Cain and takes place in the Florida Keys. It is really excellent. In early episodes you will find yourself saying, "Huh?" But stick it out. All your questions get answered as it continues to unfold.

I'm now watching Death In Paradise. It's a light dramedy and takes place in the Carribbean. Each episode is a new police case to be solved. It's very well done and quite enjoyable.

The Fall - it's a BBC production with Gillian Anderson. She's in charge of investigating a serial killer in Belfast. Excellent series. I'm now in season 2.

I watched season 1 of The Fall, it was good, very intense. I didn't know there was a season 2. I'll have to find it and watch it.

Well, we got the new TV (47" LG LED 24Hz), Samsung Blu-Ray with internet capability, Bose speakers, new DISH, and wireless router all set up this weekend. The Netflix download went perfectly, (2.1 download speed, as tested) so this morning, I changed my account to get Blu-Ray discs when available but only 2 discs at a time, down from 3. What we can't believe is the improved quality of the old DVDs now played in the Blu-ray player. Amazing! Thanks to all. We now only need to figure out what to do with the remotes. I like the DISH remote a lot more than the old DirecTV one, but Jim wants to use the Harmony remote that we saw in Costco. That will take us a little experimenting to see if we want to go with the other remote. We really only watch movies about twice a week anyway, so we may be fine with the DISH remote plus the speakers remote fr most of the week.

I'm so glad that you watched and enjoyed it. I thought it to be pretty special. I watched another good one last night...Philomena with Judi Dench. This is based on a true story about a young Irish girl who is 'sent to the nuns' when she becomes pregnant. The girls have their babies, and are forced to work (toil) under poor conditions, only to have their babies sold to rich customers, often from America. Judi portrays the girl when she is elderly and has an opportunity to go to America to search for her lost son. As usual, Judi is riveting in this film. The range of emotions that move across her face......very remarkable. Look for it on Netflix.

"We'll have to start up one of these services at the condo while we are away from home." chisue, just to clarify, a Netflix subscription is for use wherever you are. It's not location specific in any way. You get a subscription and then use it when and where you wish, You just need hardware that will pick pass along the signal to your TV. That could be a laptop, or a Blu Ray player if it has the Netflix app and internet connectivity. See attached for Netflix's bandwidth recommendations. 3-4 Mb is adequate. Streaming video of any kind is not a good idea for anyone on a use-limited connection, including most satellite internet connections or a cell phone data connection that's NOT unlimited, because it will exhaust your use allowance very fast. . "Last Cab to Darwin" - Aussie road trip movie - a dying man drives cross country thru Outback to reach a eauthanasia doctor .... and unexpected things keep occuring. "The Imitation Game" fascinating true story of a sorta semi-autistic genius type who cracks nazi code thus shortening the war by several yrs. Both these were good - and imho any movie that gets me to cry is good! Wondering what other movie options are there besides netflix? Saw the last batch of listings of "new" films and its ALL CRAP - nothing but murders and weird .... and I do mean weird... sexual behaviors. Like to think Im open minded but Jeez Louise. Some things Id rather not know about. I watch a lot of movies and Im to the point where Ive seen ev I want to see on Netflix basic membership -I would upgrade my membership except I realllly dont want to mess around with sending dvds back and forth--- ughhhh! Would much rather watch online?

Bloodlines is only available as DVD, otherwise I'd check it out.

mare - I'm sorry, I hope I didn't disappoint you. I meant to type that I was now watching Series 2 . The BBC runs are extremely short. I'm sure you probably watched the entire run. The show aired in 2013 with 5 episodes and another 6 in 2014. I plan on watching the last one tonight.

Two more titles:

Broadchurch - another excellent production, top notch acting and plenty of red herrings to keep you guessing.

Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries - Miss Fisher is an absolutely delightful Australian detective (think Aussie Nancy Drew). It's set in the 1920's and the costumes alone are worth tuning in to view.

If we're talking British shows, we love New Tricks. We also really like Scott and Bailey and Last Tango in Halifax. The series are so short, only 6 episodes, and the actors often appear on each others show. Jillian has a part in Scott and Bailey for a few episodes.

I looked and looked for the Helen Mirren version of Prime Suspect, but I can't find it anywhere.....just the final episode. We watch the American Prime Suspect.

maire_cate, you're right. I did watch all the episodes. There were 2 "series" as the Brits call them, but they were both about the same case. It wasn't your fault, as soon as I looked it up I remembered seeing all of the episodes in both series. I had a senior moment as they say.

We watched Bloodlines recently on Netflix and liked it a lot. Enjoyed Broadchurch, The Fall as well.

We also enjoyed Top of the Lake starring Mad Men's Elizabeth Moss....a murder mystery set in New Zealand.

I've seen those BBC ones on Netflix too. They are so well done, as is Grace & Frankie. Haven't checked out Top of the Lake. Love seeing them all at once, but THAT can become an addiction I fear! Just finished Rectify....well 2 seasons. Very good too.
