As Westelle confirmed from my earlier post, Queen Anne's Lace is the original carrot. It is quite safe to eat. If you check out the botanical name of carrot, it's Daucus carota var. sativus. QAL is Daucus carota. The modern carrot is simply a cultivar (cultivated variety) of the original wild carrot (QAL). The only difference is in the colour and taste of the root. BUT.... The plant resembles several others which may be poisonous, including Hemlock and FoolÂs Parsley. To distinguish Queen Anne's Lace from Hemlock or Fool's Parsley: Queen Anne's lace has one single blue/purple flower in the centre of the flower cluster, the root has carrot smell and it prefers a dry growing environment. Poison Hemlock and Fools Parsley are found in wet areas. AND....The leaves contain furocoumarins that may cause allergic contact dermatitis from the leaves, especially when wet. Later exposure to the sun may cause mild photodermatitis. [This is NOT the same as 'poisonous' - it will only affect susceptible people with allergies to the plant. Some people have the same reaction to yarrow, ragwort, chamomile etc.] Here's another recipe, made with the flowers of QAL: Queen Anne's lace Jelly 18 large Queen AnneÂs lace flower heads 4 Cups water 1/4 Cup lemon juice 1 pkg. powdered pectin 3 1/2 Cups + 2 Tbsp. sugar Bring water to a boil. Remove from heat. Add flower heads (push them down into the water). Cover and steep 30 minutes. Strain. Measure 3 Cups liquid into 4-6 quart pan. Add lemon juice and pectin. Bring to a rolling boil, stirring constantly. Add sugar and stir constantly. Cook and stir until mixture comes to a rolling boil. Boil 1 minute longer, then remove from heat. Add color (pink) if desired. Skim. Pour into jars leaving 1/4" head space. Process in hot water bath for 5 minutes. Makes about 6 jars.

Lycopus, I suspected that it was a Ranunculus but because it was so alone while all the rest on our land are in colonies wanted to confirm. RW, thanks for nailing down the exact species for me. I had seen the pic from the link you sent but wasn't sure. So, this little beauty, all alone, will probably be joined by more next Spring. Thanks for the help from all. Jill

Jennifer —-(Spraying with Neem Oil and or and other mixtures to eradicate the insects organically could still harm those beneficial insects. Some people will just let those pest stay on the tree because they dont want to harm them. Its a difficlt choice to make for some and you need to understand that some bad infestations that might get out of hand and could cause your trees to become weak and allow other diseses to slowly kill your tree. i always try and let Mother Nature work on the right balance of the pest verses the beneficial insets to keep everything in check. But sometimes i will have to step in and use more than organic to combact the problem. its up to you to decide what is best for your tree. Laura Even those that eat leaves ___ Katydids 🌺

I have a few ideas. I think I know what you are going for. I'm only showing the plants I've grown. I have both Lakeside Lollipop and Nippers. Lakeside Lollipop is much larger than Nippers but that could be the location of mine I guess. Here are a few pictures. Limey Lisa is a great plant. It does go very green. Here is a picture of it in mid August below Spring Fling Itty Gold is a sport of Shade Parade. I've had Shade Parade for a while. It gradually goes more green as the year progresses but is a very nice small, round plant with round leaves. The picture below shows Shade Parade (for shape and color) on the left. Boyz toy's is another suggestion. It is on the right. It is stays much more yellow but the leaves are not as round. This picture was taken at the end of July. Boyz Toy's at the end of September Itty Gold, sport of Shade Parade, in early July 2015 Itty Gold in August 2016, it's beside Spartacus Vanilla Cream suggested above is also a great plant at least for me. It is shown below left in a group of small and mini plants. That's Lakeside Lollipop in the center.
