Freaking over cabinet glaze - Don't do a long distance reno!
Comments (28)I am going thru this exact problem with my Diamond cabinets. They sell them thru Lowes, but I bought them from A KD. I also wanted a special amount of the glaze, in my case we wanted heavy. Our cabinets are maple with a palomino glaze that makes the edges darker, almost dark brown /black. We were told it can't be ordered that way, so we ordered a sample door and it looked great. We placed the order and when they came in, we loved them. The appliance panels came in later and they didn't match at all. They were much, much lighter in the maple color as well as the glaze. I was upset after spending so much money to hide my refrigerator, it now stood out like a sore thumb. My KD had the Diamond Rep come to our house and she agreed they looked very different, She said that it didn't matter that they weren't ordered at the same time ( I didn't believe this at all). She has sent in one our cabinet doors that match and they are making the new appliance panels right now. They are due to be done any day now. So, it can be done right if you get the Rep involved. I will post here when they come in so you can know if it worked or not. I am hopeful that it will. She promised me that I would be happy. It's funny how we wanted the darker glaze at first and now that they are all in, I like the medium glaze that we got. The darker would have outlined the cabinets too much for me....See MoreHope you don't mind if I vent
Comments (11)On the wavy walls thing: if the walls were already in place and you were just putting new sheetrock on, this may not be the GC's fault. The most common reason would be that the original carpenters didn't install the 2 x 4s with all the crowns (bows in the length of the stud) facing the same direction. In our kitchen we had one stud with the crown facing into the kitchen vs.facing into the bedroom on the other side of the wall. That one stud caused the entire run of cabinets to need really impressive shims to get everything straight. Less likely, but still possible, is the original carpenters got one or more studs slightly out of alignment. If your GC built that wall, then wavy falls on his head, otherwise he gets a pass on this one. In either case, he'll be out of your hair soon. Soon! Comments (28)D>E. Took out a loan on previous property that was paid off. the beauty of that is, no building, bank people looking over your shoulder with every step. The downfall is no one looking over your shoulders. Not sure if that would have helped. I've heard awful things about construction loans, so honestly I don't know. You know, that house I hate next door rented in two days, two year lease, two med students that love it. So I suppose center halls, more separate space are not deal breakers. Just when I realize I could have done it the right way, from my perspective, if I had analyzed the plans and gotten professional help, they hopefully could have transformed drawings to something tangible, Hence, my post! dsnine, I really wasn't upset with your statement, that is was wrong. I believe it is fundamentally wrong, but, I also think that those fundamentals may have changed with younger people. I hated growing up with antiques, but as an only child (parents dead) I now can't envision my life without those antiques. Neither of my boys want any part of antiques. My great-grandfather built that china corner cabinet. It's in the will they can't sell it. I'll haunt them, I promise, if they do!...See MoreSerious roof issues and ceiling issues, and I don't know what to do.

Have you or anyone poked their head into the attic to view the damage area with a good flash light? If the location of your attic access is near the chimney, one might be able to see the problem area by putting your upper body through the attic access and look around. If that is not sufficient, then one needs to go up into the attic and move to the problem area. This requires care to step only on the rafters and not put your foot through the ceiling and possibly getting hurt. Also, there should be attic insulation, and if one intends to wade around in that, proper foot and legging wear should be used. This problem is serious and must be addressed. Damage continues as long as this problem exists. In a prior post, a good illustration was shown. I'll add another one showing flashing around a chimney. Note that the lower edge of the flashing comes out on top of the shingles. The base flashing goes on first and then the counter-flashing collar is installed. There should be at least a 4 inch overlap with the collar flashing over the base flashing. A "saddle" is shown on this illustration. It is used to channel water away from a "pocket' region where water can collect and run under the shingles. Often, this is the the upper side of the chimney where it pierces the roof. (Saddles are custom fitted to the problem area and can have shapes differing to the one shown here.) I hope you find a knowledgeable tradesman....See Moreessdana
