Hi odyssey3, This indeed has many lights !!! but that doesn't mean it can't work in fact it may be quite exciting. On a dimmer and on at 1/3 the light cast would be very warm and well distributed. I think the reason this could work for you but not for many is because you have a high ceiling. 30x29 is large but it's all relative. If this is a good distance from the closest wall I think it would be very dramatic ! Lighting in general is one of the more interesting ways to personalize your home. Go for what you like !! jd

Thanks for the posts everyone. jessie21, I think there are various ways to figure it out, but it all depends on how tall the people are in your house, really! The recommendations I have seen say to go 30-40" ABOVE the countertop. If you go on the rejuvenation.com website and select a pendant light then there'sd a tool you can use to detemrine the length by inputting your ceiling height, etc. Also, a great tip that I am going to try after work today is to buy some balloons and string, and blow up the balloons and tack the string to the ceiling to hang them at different height. You can determine your ideal length by doing this exercise especially if you have people sit (or pretend to sit if you don't have seating yet, like me) at the peninsula (or island) counter and then stand in various places in the kitchen as well and find the perfect length. Have you DH or any other people in your house there to detemrine the right length based on their height/ability to see. You want to avoid having anyone craning their necks around the fixtures to see into the kitchen and beyond the peninsula... HTH tklahr, I'll try to see if that 12" formula works! Thanks for the tip. The first fixture, the arabesque, is from Shades of Light, though I have found on local store websites too. Here is a pic I found of these by the way. Not the same color. Does this make anyone feel differently? These ceilings are probably 9 feet, right? I am reconsidering the size of the orb. I may just get it, but get the smaller one that is 23 inches wide. I may buy at a local place that would let me return it for free! Here is a pic I took today of the large (29 inch) one with my hand in front. This looks like a large (29 inch) orb. Here is our room. The chandelier in the pic is about 24-26 across. It has been pulled up really high during construction. This pic doesn't show the whole wall. It is a weird picture--perspective is off--it is wider... I am also thinking the second option for the island might work--the lantern with the "fretwork." I also found this one on Shades of Light, but might be able to get locally, so again, I could return for free. It is 17.25 tall and only 12 wide. These aren't them, but maybe give the feel: These lanterns look pretty big and the ceilings look like 8 feet...? Is 30 inches the normal distance off the top of the island? I want to measure where i have mine now to get a better idea, but I could use the 17.25 fretwork ones and still have 12 inches from the ceiling. Would this look weird? Here is a reminder of the ones I am now talking about: I have found some other types of lights I like too. Can't necessarily afford all the ones pictured above. That is another thing I liked about my original choices--the prices.

This was so helpful. Yours look perfect as they are. I’m in a similar dilemma; this convinced me, go big or go home! Ive got 9’ ceilings and an 8‘6” island. I went with bronze aviary lanterns (no glass to dust!) and the lightness works despite the larger size. hubby held them up so I could see them in place, more or less. Before taking this step I thought they were too large. Don’t mind the old stools and yet-to-be refinished floors! It’s a work in progress.
