Are these pendants too big?
I was all set to order these pendants for above my island, but when I looked at how tall they are, I got worried. I guess I prefer lights that are a little oversized as opposed to too small, but I am worried that this will be too much. It is 18 inches wide and 20.25 tall. My ceilings are only 8 feet tall and the island is going to be either 8 or 8.5 long. Also, a little bit related is the fixture I am going to use in the dining area. That area has vaulted ceilings that get to about 11.5 feet high. The space is about 13x13 or so and will have a table that is 84 inches long. I was deciding if an orb fixture that is 29 inches in diameter is too big. On the home decorating board, people thought it would be good and the smaller option (23 inches) would be too small. Here are both fixtures. Thanks for any input on size? First in pendant for over island. Second is orb chandelier for dining area.

Comments (15)Thanks for the posts everyone. jessie21, I think there are various ways to figure it out, but it all depends on how tall the people are in your house, really! The recommendations I have seen say to go 30-40" ABOVE the countertop. If you go on the rejuvenation.com website and select a pendant light then there'sd a tool you can use to detemrine the length by inputting your ceiling height, etc. Also, a great tip that I am going to try after work today is to buy some balloons and string, and blow up the balloons and tack the string to the ceiling to hang them at different height. You can determine your ideal length by doing this exercise especially if you have people sit (or pretend to sit if you don't have seating yet, like me) at the peninsula (or island) counter and then stand in various places in the kitchen as well and find the perfect length. Have you DH or any other people in your house there to detemrine the right length based on their height/ability to see. You want to avoid having anyone craning their necks around the fixtures to see into the kitchen and beyond the peninsula... HTH tklahr, I'll try to see if that 12" formula works! Thanks for the tip. Comments (24)I'm not going to get into the conversation over height of pendant lights, but I will add that you should definitely mix metals. It's what gives kitchens visual interest, makes them look custom/new/modern, and keeps them from looking like builder grade. And that would be especially important to you because your kitchen is so white and could lean to the boring side if you're not careful. So in other words ... do not match your pendant lights to your faucet finish....See Morependants too big?
Comments (6)The 14' can support them, but they're taking most of the 4' at the spots where you hang them -- you need more than a foot of head space in order not to feel crowded there. I think you need something much smaller -- if your designer talked you into them, they should give you back at least part of the cost......See Morekelleg69

8 years agoI am looking for something like the round one for my sitting room - where did you find it?
I ended up going with two smaller pendants for my island(instead of one large chandelier), and am really surprised with how happy I am with them. I don't like things in my face, and with 8' ceilings, 30" off my counter, they are more in my face than I expected. I think a larger one would have bugged me more. But that's just me. Also think about what kind of lighting you want.. I realized I wanted task lighting, so I chose something more functional - despite my love for the many chandeliers I saw! The one I picked is below, and with the right light bulb lights my island nicely.

8 years agoThe orb is from Ballard Designs, but you can find them by Crystorama and our local lighting store has them. I love the orb and have one in our vacation house over the dining table. I want to make a bit of a statement with my lights, but don't want to overwhelm. I like lanterns and things with "quatrefoil" patterns... I love Circa Lighting, but don't want to spend anywhere close to those prices. I am looking for fixtures under $300 for sure. Under $200 would be great.

8 years agolast modified: 8 years agoFrom my 8' ceiling, my island pendant hangs 28.5" tall, circumference = 32". Now, my island is more of a square (6x7), so we are never near the center.
P.S. I like your lighting choices!

8 years agolast modified: 8 years agoI have a 26" five-light chandelier over a small table, so it's not the length. I think they're basing it off of length only. Each ring of the orb is 29" diameter so it's the overall size of it. Imagine it as interlocking hula hoops.
Here's one in a open concept dining room. Not bad at all because of the size of the space.

I am also thinking the second option for the island might work--the lantern with the "fretwork." I also found this one on Shades of Light, but might be able to get locally, so again, I could return for free. It is 17.25 tall and only 12 wide.

I want to measure where i have mine now to get a better idea, but I could use the 17.25 fretwork ones and still have 12 inches from the ceiling. Would this look weird?
