Would New Dawn be too large for this area? Other suggestions?
Comments (12)I would suggest other wichurana ramblers such as Leontine Gervaise, Alberic Barbier or even Albertine. I grow a good few ramblers and climbers in very tight spaces - although they will cover a fair amount of wall (and go round the corner - they have cane flexibility) they can be kept quite tight to the wall - almost 2 dimensional. The hardiness may be a factor but on a south facing wall, I have found the wichuranas to be fairly tough roses, Failing that, I will also second Nahema as a rather lovely, well behaved rose but there probably is a hardiness factor to consider there. If you were not desperately bothered about rebloom, take a look at the ayreshire ramblers (yes, I know they can get huge) but you will not find any rose as flexible and well behaved as Ayreshire Splendens. Finally, there is a lovely helenae hybrid called Lykkefund which is both thornless and easily trained and may well be jardy for your area - it is a huge favourite in Scandinavia....See MoreAre 18' wide pendants too large & Other light suggestions?
Comments (19)Fishies: I think you're on the right rack with the 7" bell. We have the 16" Rejuvenation globe that is your second choice in the OP, flushmount in a bedroom. It's perfect for that application -- large enough to have some visual weight, casts a nice overall glowing light. But as linelle mentions, I think a downward-focused light will be better over a peninsula, better task lighting. The globe would be good as flushmount or pendent general kitchen light or over a sink. Since the bells are bit smaller diameter, could you do three over the peninsula? FYI, I think you'll love the Rejuvenation schoolhouse series. You can tell the stripes are hand-painted (we have red and yellow ones). Plus, they're made in Portland instead of China! We've always had excellent in-store and online service from them. Good luck....See MoreIs 42' too wide for a drawer?
Comments (18)I have a freestanding kitchen lower cabinet unit I purchased while awaiting my remodel that has three 47" drawers in it. I love it so much I'm getting some fatty drawers in my remodel. It has Blum selfclose slides (maybe not the best of Blum since it's an Ikea piece) and I've loaded up the two large drawers with some pretty heavy items. The shallow drawer is a little silly--if I were customizing it, I'd have it broken up into two or three. It has the full front builtin drawer pull so no knob placement concerns (but the 15 month-old has just learned to open the flour/sugar/heavy canister stuff drawer from the side so it slides pretty smoothly). My new drawers will have false double drawer fronts so they don't look so wide. I guess that tells me how many knobs I'll need. My cabinet maker says not to jump in them, but otherwise they should hold up....See MoreLower Cabinet Drawers Too Wide?
Comments (56)I couldn’t agree more with the latest comments. I only have the best of intensions but at the end of the day, it’s your kitchen. You need to do what works best for you and your family. But I make one my last post for a prep sink. I highly recommend a prep sink on the island as @mama goose_gw zn6OH mocked up with the green lines. You won’t need to cross into the cleaning zone where the kids will be working WHEN you need access to the sink to rinse vegetables or drain a pot of pasta. Personally, I don’t like the thought of carrying a 5+ gallon stock pot (homemade tomato sauce or chicken stock) and risk burning a small child who runs into my legs. I was that child and I am fortunate I only have a burn scar the inside of my ankle; at least on the my front of my body that I can see. This might be going overboard but you can train your family to call out “HOT BEHIND” when ever someone needs to pass through. I come from a large family who likes to cook. I have 3 sisters, 2 foodie BILs, a mom and MIL. We trip over each other in the kitchen and push our way through each other to access to the sink whenever we try making a meal together. As kids I didn't really notice the lack of a prep sink but as adults, I find it more pleasant to cook with them when we each get our own sink. One person can be prepping while another person is washing up. And there’s aways a free sink to wash hands or rinse a glass. It was one of my many must haves. If you still don’t see the need for a prep sink, please at a minimum, look into how much work it will be to add into later if you change your mind down the road. Like, how will it be vented and drained. Do you need a new drain stack or can they tie it into the existing sink drain. Will you have odd shaped bulk heads in the room below the kitchen. Also I’m very glad to hear you’ve decided to move the microwave out of your prep zone. You don’t want someone trying to open the microwave while you're working with a sharp knife in your hands. I know; I'm over the top. I worked in a kitchen before so I’ve seen my share of cuts and burns......See Morecpartist
