I'm not sure what the cause might be, there are just too many variables.

I would suggest to toggle the wireless off and then back on the phone and see if that improves your signal.
It's also easy to 'Forget' the wireless network (after disconnecting) and then rejoining the network. You'll need to re-enter your passcode.

If the first two steps are not successful, try powercycling your network.
Sometimes I need to perform this step when we have power outages due to storms. The modem and router don't come back up in the correct order. I resolve that by unplugging both devices, after 20 seconds plug in the modem and allow all the lights to come on (especially internet or online). Plug in the router and try to connect with your phone after 2-3 minutes.

Are you saying the signal is "fair", but it connects ok?

I agree with PKponder's advice, but would add that interference from neighbors' WIFIs can cause disruptions too, even when all your equipment is working properly. Often because most routers are set to a default channel and few people know they can change it to get a clearer signal path. When you look on the device at available Wifi signals, how many do you see?

I just went in the bedroom and checked my connection. It showed connected with "fair" signal. Then I walked into the room where the router is and it shows "good". This particular router doesn't have an antenna to make change positions but as I said it is the same router that I had last Fall when I was able to use my phone in the bedroom.

Also, I live out in the country with no neighbors so I don't have conflicting wifi signals.

If you have a connection, then I'm not sure what your concern is.

Phones can turn power higher and lower for send/receive signals, depending on the signal strength it measures. If you haven't moved something in the signal path, I don't have any other ideas. If when standing next to the router you don't see a full strength signal, my guess is the cause is one of one of two things:

1) a problem with either the router or the phone, and I would suspect whichever is older, or

2) the displayed signal strength is incorrect.

One indirect sign that a phone is dealing with a weak signal is you see the battery strength decline faster than normal when in use. There are routers available to which high efficiency external antennae can be attached, but if you're getting a useable signal for this and other devices where you want to, this would be overkill.

If it's working, I'd leave it alone.

If you read my post you would know that I get a good signal if I'm in the same room as the router. My concern is that some of my apps do not work as they don't have a strong enough signal which they used to work no problem.

So, did you try any of the steps that I outlined for you? Was there any improvement?

Thanks everyone for the responses. I have decided to just use my tablet in the bedroom. I don't know why the reception has changed but it has.

Barb to my knowledge I haven't updated or dropped. I don't know how to do anything with my router.
