something like fantastic fic site for non-fic?

I find the fantasticfiction site so useful, I am hoping there is something similar for non-fiction books.

I use goodreads if I know of a particular writer I want to look up but it isn't quite the same thing....

Dawn, I've never been to the site you mention but think it would be very difficult for a similar site of 'non-fiction' as it would have to encompass such a huge range of topics. Everything from Architecture to Zoology with all subjects in between. I think you would have to pick a 'topic' in which you were interested, say flock wallpaper designs or salamander breeding and find lists by similar 'groupies'.

Dawn, I haven't responded before because I don't know a site specifically devoted to nonfiction. I read a lot of NF, but I rely primarily on Amazon recommendations in their 'Best Nonfiction' section. Like you I have used goodreads, but I find its format unwieldy, mainly because many of the members with whom I seem to be simpatico choose to keep their libraries private. (I think it's unfair to tantalize me with hints of what's in those libraries if I can't take a look at them.) Likewise with Library Thing.

I, too, wish for an effective site devoted to nonfiction, but I suspect Vee is right that it is just too huge and diverse to fit the model of fiction sites.

Let's see, where to start? LOL Mine might be a bit too busy for some peoples' taste. I have gnomes and handmade stepping stones in the new herb garden, head and foot boards bordering a couple of the raised beds, a gazing ball or 2, metal flowers in a few of the beds, a few hanging bird cages, weather vane, wooden stakes (plant markers) in the shapes of cowboys, bunnies, squirrels, Patricia , the manequine who gets a couple of changes of clothes each year, many pots of flowers mixed in the herb garden and around the edges of the garden, and 2 hand carved chairs backed by ladders covered with birdhouses, and a naked umbrella planted with morning glories, just starting to climb the umbrella and ladders. There's probably more, but I'm not out there to look! LOL Nancy

While it looks like there is a variety of successful approaches, I think the reason some have success with one approach and others don't is the nature of the stains. Some stains are simple body oils stuck in the texture of the nonslip pads. Using something alkaline like shampoo should work for those to soften the stains and allow them to be scrubbed lightly. WD-40 should also dissolve those and lift them. Other stains are based on hard water build up of calcium. The calcium can't be seen because it is white but the calcium will catch and hold the body oils. If you cannot get the calcium off, the stains remain. This is where an acidic approach would work. Barkeeper's Friend is oxalic acid with a mild abrasive. If the stains are calcium based, this should wash them away very easily. I would like to suggest another approach to the plain body oils with no calcium build up. There is a cleaner used in the automotive detailing industry called Super Clean. It comes in a purple spray bottle at auto stores, hardware stores, Walmart, etc. It is basically 409 on steroids. If you have trouble breathing when using 409, then you will really have trouble breathing around Super Clean. I bought some for my car and, of course, it works great. Then I read the label and decided to try it in the kitchen. The first thing I tried it on was burned on grease on a stainless pan - the bottom of the pan. I sprayed it on and let it sit for a "dwell time" of 10 minutes. Then I ran hot water from the faucet into the pan and 99% of it just rinsed clean with no scrubbing. I thought maybe I had a pan with grease that looked burned on but was just sort of already softened, but no. I tried it again and again with the same results. So that is my experience with Super Clean. I thought someone might give it a try on their tub texture spots and report back here with results.

Maybe you meant sodium carbonate. Sodium carbonate (washing soda) isn't just a filler. It softens hard water, binding up the calcium and magnesium so that detergents are not inactivated by them. And it adjusts the pH to a level effective for cleaning. I may try Ecover just because I'm kind of compulsive about trying lots of cleaning products. But in real-world conditions of hard water that is not scalding hot, I'd expect better results from OxiClean. I get a 15-pound box of OxiClean at Costco for I think about $12. Ecover around $4-5/lb is a lot more expensive. I'd have to get equal cleaning power from 1/5 the amount by weight to break even, costwise.

I'm actually not sure this is how to respond in the new Houzz format, but I'll give it a shot. Dsd2682, I don't think any of the Kordes roses above have any fragrance, but I'm not a good judge of such things with a poor "nose". Most Kordes rose are bred for cold hardiness and frequent flowering, and often exquisite beauty, but fragrance is something that is often sacrificed. I also like the Delbards, and our summers are good for them. I haven't been able to keep Liv Tyler alive through our winters, but Dame des Chenonceau does nicely for me, as do a dozen or so other Delbards. My favorite is Edgar Degas, among the Delbard painter series. I'll try to post my allowed 4 photos to test the Houzz site this time around. Thanks, I thought it would be a long shot....maybe someday!

I didn't consider the diversity of such a thing, because I was thinking about history books at the time. (Someone had mentioned David Starkey, which is what set me off).

Dawn, David Starkey (very clever and doesn't he know it) has brought out a book about the Magna Carta. It was originally signed/sealed in 1215 so 'celebrations' are the order of the day. He also did a TV programme about it. You might find it interesting as I know Americans take it much more seriously than we do over here . . . in fact I wonder how many UK folk know anything about it at all. History, especially the 'old' variety is hardly taught these days.Article on Magna Carta (long)

oooo, thanks!! hope that tv show is available on DVD or streaming! I will definitely request the library buy the Magna Carta book, if they haven't already.
