A Microclimate

This was photographed May 19 at
11:50 p.m. Johann Strauss is in the foreground. I directed the flash up
45° though there wasn't much background with which to bounce light. I used an old
Vivitar 1980s 2800D Auto Thyristor flash atop a Pentax K-5 dslr with 50mm
lens. The yellow leaf spots are my fungicide spray. This is my first
effort using this legacy flash on this camera; I am
amazed tonight what a combination of a modern camera can do with this old
flash.

This bed has a micro-climate that is
incredibly rose friendly. Four out of five of the roses in this bed were
planted in 2000. It is a special bed with a southern exposure protected on
three sides by old downtown commercial buildings. I would estimate that it is
more like Zone 7, than like Zone 4-B. We did have one night at 30 below this
past winter. The few roses here are incredibly vigorous for Iowa considering our
winter.
