Bad soil, too much water and too much salt accumulation as a result, and most likely insufficient light. Remove those browned leaves and re-pot into a more porous mix. It looks like it will survive just fine. Josh

Your tree is certainly being tortured by multiple causes. Avocados like high nitrogen food on a regular schedule. You actually have some fruit on your plant that does not have enough energy to grow leaves, remove the fruit. I would take the whole container and immerse it up to the rim in a tub of water, preferable water without a lot of Boron in it. Does your water source not make available a test report on the water they supply? After you remove the container from the soak and it drains the excess water, I would dissolve a table spoon of avocado labeled food such as that available from Lily Miller or if not available, Miracid or other citrus/avocado food per gallon of water. I hadn't planned on saying anything, but I might as well now. When it's dry enough that raising relative humidity (RH) seems like a good idea, and if misting/spritzing is the route we take, it lasts about 10 minutes before all the water droplets immediately surrounding the plant evaporate into water vapor, become mixed into the ambient air, and diffused to the degree RH has returned to exactly what it was when the grower misted 10 minutes earlier. Quick math shows that misting might help marginally for 10 minutes, but have no effect during the 1,430 minutes that remain in the day. If you mist 3 times per day, you will have marginally raised RH for 2% of the time in a day. While I agree that can help satisfy the grower's nurturing bone and make the grower feel better for the effort, the plant's surely going to wonder what all the fuss is about If the preferred method is a humidity tray, I did a little experiment with a ficus bonsai in a 3 x 4.5" pot. RH in the room when I set it up was about 15.0%, so somewhere near twice as dry as the average RH of the Sahara Desert. This is common for homes that don't have automatic humidification. I covered the bottom of a 10 x 15 humidity tray with about 1/4" of aquarium gravel, then poured water into the tray to the top of the gravel. 2 hours later some of the water had evaporated, but the digital hygrometer I wedged into the foliage of the tree indicated RH within the foliage mass was only .4% (4 tenths of one percent) higher than the air in other parts of the living room. Now, since the plant loses water via transpiration, that meager rise could easily have been the result of normal transpirational water loss from the foliage, but I didn't fret that it was so low, I concluded setting a plant on or immediately above a humidity tray hoping it would raise RH enough to make even a meager difference was pretty much an exercise in futility, no matter how I looked at things. That's the view from here, YMMV, but you won't beat a full room or whole house humidification set-up. Al
