High school graduation gift ideas
Comments (15)My son is graduating too this year. We'll probably give him money. We got our older son a St. Michael medal (his name is Michael) and nice gold chain + some money. Middle son said he didn't want the medal, so will just give him a bit more $$. Personally, I dislike gift cards - unless they're for a specific purpose to a store that they already know they want to shop at. My kids have gotten countless gift cards over the years from relatives to stores they don't really shop at. So, they "save" them thinking they'll find something they need at some point. I'm not talking about handing the kid a small fortune, but at some point they need to learn to control themselves with more than $100 bucks in the bank. My son recently started working steadily and we opened him a bank account with an ATM card. He'll use this account in college, and I'm assuming will deposit all his gift money into it. Maybe we'll talk about creating a savings account too, so he knows he's got the money over there, but isn't tempted every time he goes to the ATM!...See MoreNeed college graduation gift idea for step-daughter.
Comments (25)Hi Kids, Thanks for starting this thread, saramynn. We also have a graduation in May, and have been trying to come up with somthing as a gift. When I think of a graduation gift I like to think of something that will have meaning to the graduate throught the years and remind them of their accomplishments each time they see it. That being said, I'm not crazy about a gift of technology just because of it's short life span. Money is always a safe bet but does not have that personal touch. I think I like sherrmanns idea of the Waterford crystal. Even if it was a smaller piece and then give an additional gift of cash. Thanks Kids, now I have a direction to go in. Good luck to everyone involved in there own quest for the perfect gift! sooey...See MoreGraduation Gift
Comments (17)The biggest question is how close is this kid and family? Since you don't say otherwise and say they're a relative, it doesn't sound like you're really close or this kid has special meaning to you so I'll go more with that as the higher probability. I can't imagine graduating "middle school" as being celebratory to the point of gift expectations. What next, they get a gift for wiping their butt after using the bathroom? Sometimes there's end of school parties and if coincidently it's something like finishing middle school, OK, so it be. But if it's an arm's length acquaintanceship I wouldn't be thinking about much, if any, of a gift nor do I consider this a milestone. Encouragement is one thing, spoiling kids is another. Will there be other kids there that you also know? Are you expected to give gifts to all of them too? As far as a (greeting) card, that's a point of contention with me these days too. I think I'd rather spend $5 on a gift card with an included (free) gift card envelope than spend $5 on a greeting card that'll be tossed. Pretty big waste of money to me so I wouldn't be spending it on a greeting card, especially for something this trivial. Another option is to offer to bring some sort of refreshments. But as I said, it depends on how close you are to them. I do know some I'd give a fairly nice gift, essentially because I'd probably give them a gift for no real reason. But I just can't help but snicker at the thought of what friends, relatives and neighbors would do had I sent them an invitation to a party when I graduated from junior high! And normally what I would usually give for this milestone is the same I'd give for them not breaking into my house! But if I felt compelled to give a gift, $5-$10 would be tops for something this silly. Actually I think this would be an occasion for a convention "gift" rather than cash or gift card. School supplies are usually needed at this age. Perhaps a 12 pack of their favorite soft drink or something would be sufficient. I usually don't like feeding the ever-growing appetite of compulsory gift expectation that's so rampant these days....See MoreH.S. Graduation gift
Comments (12)I don't think it's necessarily bad that she isn't headed straight for college. It's difficult to know at 18 what you want to do with your life. I know many, many people with crippling student loan debt right now because they felt like they had to go to college, and they often picked majors that, in hindsight, weren't the best choices. I don't know if anyone has priced out colleges recently but they are extremely expensive, even state schools. I graduated 10 years ago and tuition costs have raised considerably since then. Tuition increases are outpacing pretty much anything else in the economy, and it's really becoming a problem when young adults graduate thinking they did this great thing only to have trouble finding even low paying jobs and soon facing $1,200 a month in student loan repayments. I routinely see people $60k-$80k in debt at 22 because they went to college like they were supposed to. Community college is usually a good deal, though. Granted, wanting to work part time forever without getting any additional education isn't ideal, and I think pointing out the limitations would be a good thing. But taking some time before college isn't always a bad idea....See Moremare_wbpa
