Is my Jade quite ill, or is this normal...?
Comments (8)Thanks for the friendly responses! Josh, you are exactly right- the plant was reaching for the light. As of late, it gets a ton of light. I am moving in 2 weeks, and my new house will have a wonderful spot for it with great light. I will re-pot it this year without the sand. I read somewhere that Jades like the sand, but I don't remember why. Would regular Miracle Grow potting mix work if I added Perlite? Now, to find a way to get my poor jade to the new house without freezing it to death. Anyone know where they sell plant jackets? Ha... Purpleinopp and Sradleye, The pot has an attached saucer with what i THOUGHT were drainage holes. I never checked to see if the drains actually worked, and to be honest, I can say I have never once noticed any moisture in the saucer. I thought maybe I just wasn't soaking it enough to cause it to drain, but now I am wondering if the drains are clogged up... I will have to check on that! I read on here that when the jade is too wet, the trunk will feel a bit squishy. Mine is firm, but I will be sure to check on the drainage situation. Thanks, guys! I'll keep checking to see if anyone else sees some red flags......See Moremoving to new home
Comments (8)Gosh-so many variables I am not sure I want to touch on giving answers to your questions. I will tell you what I did in moving quite a few hostas from northern Arkansas to northern Illinois in August. Obviously they were all fully leafed out. I dug them the day before and left dirt on the roots and stuck them in pots to keep them from rolling around and destroying the petiole. On my larger ones like my Sum & Substance, I used the method of moving ken keeps bringing up of using duct tape to gather and strengthen the petioles. I had a pick-up truck and a 14' fishing boat. The pickup had a soft cover over the bed and the boat was uncovered. The ones in the truck were not covered other than the tonneau. The larger ones went into the boat in clear plastic bags with holes cut into them to let it breath. The bag was to protect them from the 70 mph winds. My reasoning being black plastic will absorb too much heat, and sealed bags would steam the plants. One of the problems when moving a lot of hostas a long distance could be dehydration. Not knowing how far you plan to move, what time of year, how many and how large your plants, etc.? At the right time you may consider what people like Hallson's does in shipping their hostas to customers. They bundle the pets, thoroughly bare-root the plant, and seal it in a clear plastic bag and pack them in a foam peanut insulated box to keep them cool. Then instruct us to soak the roots to rehydrate them and get them into soil quickly. I am sure others will have some other suggestions. I'd never done such a move B4 so I was in uncharted water, and I am sure I could have done better. I didn't have a single hosta die when I moved them even though the day was cloudless. Comments (10)Jenk, I don't think you're crazy at all. Sometimes in life we make sacrifices to get ahead. The first time we moved to the country as a young married couple (we both grew up in the city), we only lived there for 6 months and our mobile home burned to the ground. So we were 21 years old and homeless. We built our first home then. That county had no building codes, and we just winged it. We lived with his mother for a few months and moved in when the house was nothing but bare block walls. We heated with a wood stove made out of a 55 gallon barrel. It was so cold in there that the ice in the toilets froze in the winter!! But we survived, finished that house and later sold it, built a much larger one and sold that one and are now at the age of 50 we are building our forever home. When we moved from that big house into this little single wide, we bought a 40' long overseas shipping container to store our stuff in. I got a set of shelving from a Wal-mart going-out-of-business auction so everything we own is stored neatly in the container on shelves. Now the end of this build is finally in sight and we can soon move into the new house. And not a minute too soon.....I am getting WAY too old for this!! I laid a bunch of tile this weekend and don't remember getting so sore last time I did tile work. lol!...See MoreMoving soon......need helpful insight. Long!

The blue states are shoved off into a corner and they are very expensive places to live and not overloaded with opportunities. So if you are like me, you have to find a place where you can enjoy the what the area has to offer and not let the political views of the majority get to you. The OP's viewpoints seem somewhat libertarian and then somewhat republican but who cares? Nobody. You can move to just about anywhere and nobody will shove their political views down your throat. Not even here do they do that. If I wanted to I could meet up with anoy political party that interested me but since I am not into politics I will go back to just enjoying the scenery and low cost of living, being close to good shopping and relatively OK driving distance to the big urban core where I can walk around for a few minutes or have a nice meal, feel like I stepped into the twilight zone then hop in the truck come back home where you can have a big property with horses and fire guns and play cowboys & indians and do whatever it is you please til the cows come home. The Knoxville area does come across as an area where this would be possible too so I'd say look at Knoxville....See Morecpartist
