susanwv, I haven't seen one in many yrs, but I think, that is what is called a sheepshead mushroom in this neck of the wood. My sister's friend would find huge ones and give some to her. She would bread it and fry it, very good.

Sheepshead mushroom is a little more brown, also called "hen" of the woods, wonder where they get those names!' I like hens better than chickens, haha

You're probably right. I don't know much about mushrooms. The ones your son is holding look yellower than the ones I remember. I've never heard of them called anything but sheepshead. I think I like hen or chicken of the woods better. Some of the sheepsheads look almost furry if I remember correctly, probably why they're called sheepshead. There might be different varieties.
