Robins abandon nest & 1 nestling

On a ledge under our carport, robins nested and behaved as if eggs were present (Robin would sit them and often poke under seeming to rearrange eggs). Couple weeks later, we saw one baby bird head bobbing but adult would still sit the nest and we saw very little feeding going on it seemed. For 2 days now we have seen no nest activity and only once a baby head pop up. Then for several hours this afternoon, a pair of robins (same ones?) tried building a nest atop light fixture beside door which is around the corner from carport. They kept failing because while they did find long pieces of dried grass, they used no mud to anchor and so there is now a one foot tall pile of grass debris on the cement under the light. I finally got binoculars and ladder (far enough away from original nest) an ascertained fairly well that there is one baby bird and no eggs lying in the abandoned nest.

Anyone speculate what could have happened? We did not and won't interfere. (can parasitic birds eat hosts' eggs? Can hosts ever recognize parasitic brood? Can adult birds be inept?)
