@Christopher I've only started growing succulents since last summer, not even a year yet, so I definitely don't call myself experienced..... and I really do appreciate everyone's comments and opinions, it helped tremendously every time I post on here. Without trials and errors I think it's hard to become good at anything.

David, I'm amazed how effective the root cup had been working out for you. To think you were so worried about the plant being too stressed after the long shipment arrival. And now poof! You've got roots. Congrats! Keep us updated.

It s ok if you wait longer roots will grow more but is the same thing if you do it

No idea what the previous post means but I think it looks like it is safe to transplant in to a more permanent home. You've got some really healthy looking roots that are growing fast! I would worry that leaving them out longer may cause them to dry up too fast or possibly be damaged when removing the cup and potting them up. Is there anything in the root up or is it just open space? Sorry, if you've already answered that, I didn't have a chance to read through all the posts.

@Erica thanks for the suggestions! There's water in the rootcup, they suggest submerging the stem in the water, but I'm letting the roots barely touching the water. Removing the cup is super safe they designed it well. I think I will go ahead and transplant this guy tomorrow or so :)

David, I believe the plant still have potential to grow more roots. The only added advantage to this root cup is that you can remove the lid and monitor it once in a while. But once you pot it into a container, it's all going to based off purely by feel. As a young, inexperienced and inquisitive grower, I would personally push it to grow more roots before I pot it.

Nonetheless, it should continue to grow well too when you pot it into a mix, just have to make sure you keep mix slightly more moist than usual, to slowly introduce the root to a medium because the roots weren't produced from a contact based on a medium.

Side comment and don't mean to hijack but I'm moving a lot of C&S to gritty mix and it's working well so far. I've done about 15 plants so far.

The only ones that have been tricky are the small cuttings with undeveloped root systems and few leaves to provide reserves. I'm putting those in 100% Floor Dry until they develop more roots. Plants that are mature, with good root systems, seem to be breezing through the change.

David- I have propagated many "stacked" crassulas such as your Morgan's Beauty including Crassula Moonglow which has a very similar growth habit. What I did is detach the two lowest leaves by twisting them back and forth slowly until it finally snaps off. Now you have a little bit of a stem to work with. When the stem forms a callous you can then plant it into a sandy/gritty soil. Before planting if you wish, you can dust the calloused end with a rooting powder or hormone to aid your plant to form roots. I place some medium sized stones around this type of crassula so it does not fall over during the rooting process. I would not water it at all for at least 3 weeks. After that, only until the soil is lightly moist. These stacked type of crassula take a bit longer to root and to show any growth than most others so, you will need to have patience. Some of mine did not get fully established until after 4 or 5 months of waiting! But, when they did, they really took off.

Also, I read something on this thread about rooting in water...Do NOT root succulents in water. You are doing your plant a dis-service by doing that. They may form roots that way and may even grow for a time but, you will have a much weaker plant and it will most likely have a much shorter lifespan. All the best - NJC -

@Neil thanks for all the info but of course now it's too late... but I'll keep that in mind if I have to root from cuttings again next time.

Neil and David, I think we had already touched on the point where cuttings that are rooted in soil will have high chance of stronger roots than those rooted via water or the "stretch" method. Rina too, had mentioned that water roots can never work like regular roots. So there was already a risk involved, to encourage the root to grow towards the water in the rootcup.

At the end of the day, David, if this plant grows out well after your transplant, you live to tell the tale that rooting can be done many ways including this, and it's not just with one tried and tested method - personally that's the fun part of growing these plants IMO.

I believe that 'water roots' will be more delicate and perhaps have harder time to adapt to potting mix. I don't have any evidence that they will never work like regular roots.

Yup, I will see how they do after they're potted, maybe it will surprise people maybe it won't. But I'm determined to give it the best care I can, since I loved this succulent since day one and would be very happy to see it grow and maybe one day flower :)

A little update on the little guy, took some night shot of it just now. A bit over a week after potting, looking pretty good :) the new leaves are growing very slowly but it is growing :) Gently pull the plant and it seems very solid, feels like the roots have continued to grow a bit since I potted it up. I misted the top inch of the soil for the first few days, watered it somewhat deeply once yesterday, it is in a pretty gritty mix so it has already dried.

Just a different angle... I really love how their leaves stack up, the blooms are amazing but I also love the leaves.

I recently bought a Morgan's Beauty. But your plant has a beautiful light bluish green under the fuzz that is uniquely its own. Mine is a darker green...could be the light conditions for differences , but, I think your plant is prettier.... :)

David- Azt is correct about the coloration. Most likely it has rooted but, the only way to really tell is to send it over to me (wink)

Don't ask me how, but I sorta stalked the plant, and it was resubmitted for a winter show this last Feb, and it was flowering like no tomorrow. I need to find that link again..

David- Just curious...are you familiar with Crassula moonglow? I'm asking because one evening about 6 months ago I had an emergency succulent attack. Which means I had to go to a 24-hour home depot or Lowe's to buy a plant. I went for the Moonglow. I just liked the form; sort of like a totem pole and of course very squarish. To me,it's more in line with a "pagoda" than the "ivory pagoda" variety. So, besides its beauty, what else is it about this plant that you find fascinating.

@Neil Yes, I like that cultivar a lot as well. I love most of the stacking crassulas, but I tend to choose the ones that won't grow too spaced out with insufficient lighting. Haha I have not experienced a succulent attack yet, but I definitely can understand the condition!

I like the Morgan's Beauty for the flowers of course, but also the blue-gray colour on the leaves. And the way it's stacked up is very unique, plus it doesn't grow as tall as most other stacking succulents

Funny you should mention Moonglow because I was just thinking about it earlier when I saw that picture just above...the form is so similar. I used to have one about the same size but lost it to stem-borers. Argh!

Andy- David- at the San Diego show this past weekend there was on the display table, a crassula moonglow that was not upright but, trailing on the table! I thought that was rather curious. I had never heard of a trailing variety of the moonglow. To me, it looked like it had just fallen over. (of course, I didn't say anything, i'm no expert). Just thought it was odd. But, that's okay...it's the reason I like succulents so much.

I know both of you are no doubt aware of the following crassulas:

Tom Thumb (very small)

Crassula Rupestris (large version of the tom thumb in appearance)

But, did you know there is a larger version of the Rupestris? I find very little info online about it at all. Dave's Garden.com has a brief mention of it and that's all.

My only encounter with this variety is at one of my local nurseries and they refer to it as "Crassula monolith," at least 2 and half times larger than the Crassula Rupestris.

Have either one of you heard of or encountered this variety?

Whoops - I still have Moonglow, and I saw that pic of the one trailing from the rock pot. That was an inspired choice of pot! Mine is sort of recumbent like that too.

The one I was thinking about (that got eaten by the borers) was C. 'Fallwood'. I'll see if I can find an old pic.

Sorry Neil I'm not familiar with C. rupestris. But the plants look cool, I really love "Tom Thumb" and one I have more space and more sun I might get one. The only similar crassula I have right now is C. perforata 'variegata'

David, I finally found a Morgan's Beauty for $9 + ($7 Shipping) on ETSY. I'm contemplating if I should buy it, given my limited apartment space constraints. And it's annoying as the high shipping charges tend to spur you buy more plants on an impulse to make you think it's more value for money.

Arghs, the seller has like 3 more varieties of Echeverias that I want, but not necessarily covet.

@bernard I say go for it! I wish I can get plants online that has low shipping rate like that! Here in Canada the minimum shipping from even within Canada is $12-15 CDN, and from other countries around the same or higher. So yeah I always try to get 2-3 plants if I'm ordering online as well. If you can get the Morgan's Beauty along with another Echie or two then it's definitely a good buy. Space is definitely difficult issue for windowsill growers, but I've managed to find more space even though many times I said to myself I have no more space :P. Sometimes the photos on the listing is not the plant you would get though, just FYI. If you do end up getting it, make sure to share photos!

You could build shelves that go across your windows...just sayin'. :-)

Ok David and Andy, I just bought the plant. This is insane, now I'm suffering purchasing remorse. I had bought more plants from Altmans earlier too, and I have 2 more plants from Andy on its way to me. I might need to start giving away some of my plants soon.

David, long story short.. my plant suffered during the summer humidity - I also probably under watered thinking the humidity can give the plant moisture, and now I'm restarting after I saved a small cutting that has rooted, along with another leaf that had also begun growing roots.

I also have a cutting that I saved (but not from disaster). It took several months to root, using moistened perlite helped the most. Started growing about a month or two ago.

Nice Kevin, that's a really big cutting. It's a pretty popular plant, and it's quite fussy with overwatering for sure. I'll get a snap shot of my tiny cutting when I get home.

Popular indeed. I tried looking for this plant all over for a few months because I wanted to put it in a planter with my Crassula perfoliata var. falcata but after having no luck I decided to just stick my propeller plant in with a Kalanchoe luciae.

Bernard - It wasn't so big always! Originally maybe 1/3 the size. After rooting, it got much bigger fairly quickly (and is still picking up growing speed over the winter).

Nicholas - Hope you can find one. Easily one of my favourite plants.
